Comodo whyyyyyy?

Hi,
I have been a Comodo firewall for several years now but since I upgraded to Windows 7 I have used the built-in Win7 firewall. A couple of days ago I decided to take a look at Comodo again as a friend of mine said it was now completely Win7 compatible.
After installing everything worked fine but then stuff started going wrong, probably due to misconfiguration.
First I noticed my fingerprint utility asking me to enroll my fingerprints again even though I had them enrolled months ago and used them frequently, so I clicked the message only to discover that the prints where already enrolled…yet the message kept appearing from the tray.

Then another thing I noticed was that my Filter Forge 2 (a standalone/photoshop filter suite) didn’t want to start up (its a plug in that uses a remote filter database hosted online so I figured Comodo must have blocked it,yet no warning was given).

The final thing that just cost me a whole day of work and a bunch of panic attacks was that after a reset I couldn’t log into my own user account in normal mode with a correct password. typed in my password and clicked enter but nothing happened,I clicked the button, nothing…not even “wrong password” message or something, the account just sat there with the typed in password, staring back at me and nothing happened. I restarted into safe mode and was able to log in so I am pretty sure it was Comodo,I had no trouble before it.
I restared again and Check Disk appeared and I thought what the hell, let it check the disk for errors…so it did…but it also began rewriting the the security codes for all my files in my user account which looked something like this:

Replacing invalid security id with default security id for file filename.

The definiton of which is: The specified file has an invalid security ID. Each file on an NTFS or FAT volume has a security ID assigned it. The ID assigned to the data file does not match the ID assigned to security data stream file ($SDS). There is a mismatch in Ids. Chkdsk is replacing the invalid security ID. No user action required.

and that went on for like 360000 files…
…I was pretty freaking sure that something just went very wrong but decided to wait since interrupting could cause even more damage…

After that it went on to what was seemilngly a neat startup but the screen just went black…the cursor was there but the system obviously didn’t start up. I tried again a couple of times, also in safe mode etc…

Then I tried the Windows 7 cd to recover the system by using system restore but it was the wrong disc,I tried again using another still it ow said it was incompatible with my copy of Win7 64 Home Premium

In a hurry to continue working I accidentally put in my complete wipe backup recovery DVD instead of a normal Windows 7 reinstallation and formatted all of my hard drives resulting in a frantic panic attack and having to take some Diazepam, since 6 months worth of work were on these partitions…luckily I managed to unformat the most important 1, though, currently in the process of unformatting the other and preparing to make some backups so I don’t get a heart attack next time…one partition is lost but it was the system partition and I don’t keep my important stuff on there anyway…

Anyway, as things turned out alright in the end, and as I like Comodo since it served me well in the past I would like to know what the hell happened and how I can avoid it happening again? After what happened I am pretty hesitant to reinstall it and am currently using Zone Alarm as an alternative.

Sorry to hear you’ve had these problems.

In all honesty, the reason you had problems getting these applications to run, was probably because the firewall/D+/sandbox, assuming these were the components you were using, were incorrectly configured. Unfortunately, without knowing more about these applications and their requirements, it’s impossible to make valid assumptions.

As I’m sure you realise, chkdsk will be initiated for a number of reasons, such as power glitches, system freezes, malware, bad sector discovery, power resets etc. The fact that you had just installed Comodo, may be a contributing factor, or it may simply be coincidental.

looking at the sequence of events, whatever the cause, it’s almost certain they are related, but without further information, identifying the initial cause is impossible. However, it may be worth checking your Event logs, particularly the system log for any inferences of bad disk activity. (run eventvwr.msc from the start menu)

You don’t mention if you’re using a notebook or a desktop PC? With some manufactures notebooks a setting in the BIOS needs to be changed before the restore disk can be used.

Unfortunately, having reinstalled the OS you’ve effectively removed any information that may have been useful in troubleshooting the situation. So, at this point It’s impossible to suggest what may have happened with any degree of certainty.
