G’day, My name is Logan and I’m more than slightly put out at Comodo Internet Security, free version. The reason being is that every time I try to install or uninstall a program the blasted thing keeps popping up asking if I want to do this and that. For example I just went to uninstall a program I didn’t want and the defense mode kept popping up saying it couldn’t recognize the uninstall program as a valid program. I allowed it to run setting it as a installer or updater and it still came up worse than ever. Then when I finally got that program uninstalled ten minutes later and tried another, lo and behold, it did the same thing again. Is there any way to shut that blasted thing off or make it so it doesn’t pop up every five seconds or I’m going to lose my mind. I’ve never had another program do this and it’s very annoying to say the least.
Regards,
Logan
Welcome.
You are getting alerts from Defense+, a HIPS module that is part of CIS.
"The Defense+ component of Comodo Internet Security (hereafter known simply as Defense+) is a host intrusion prevention system that constantly monitors the activities of all executable files on your PC. With Defense+ activated, the user is warned EVERY time an unknown application executable (.exe, .dll, .sys, .bat etc) attempts to run. The only executables that are allowed to run are the ones you give permission to. Defense+ also protects against data theft, computer crashes and system damage by preventing most types of buffer overflow attacks. This type of attack occurs when a malicious program or script deliberately sends more data to its memory buffer than that the buffer can handle. It is at this point that a successful attack can create a back door to the system through which a hacker can gain access. The goal of most attacks is to install malware onto the compromised PC whereby the hacker can reformat the hard drive, steal sensitive user information, or even install programs that transform the machine into a Zombie PC. For more details refer Image Execution Control Settings."
When (un)installing programs you can set the updater/installer to “Updater or Installer” (which I see you’ve done), and then a message will appear asking if you would like to set D+ to ‘Installation Mode’ which will suppress all alerts for the updater/installer.
If you want to disable D+ completely go to D+ > Advanced > D+ Settings > and tick the ‘Deactivate’ box and reboot.
Before you turn off Defense+ I would suggest putting the firewall and Defense+ into training mode and then running your typical applications for a little while before switching back to your previous settings. This lets CIS learn the behaviour of your programs without needing you to answer a pop-up for every single thing they do. Once you do this, the pop-up frequency should be greatly reduced, unless you are constantly installing new programs.
