Comodo Firewall

Hi All,
Firstly I really like the firewall software. It seems to work great. I Do agree with both sides. Firstly ALL firewall software has this “pop-up permission” spring up when you try to run a game for the first time. It does seem that I have to give permissions much more often with Comodo than with ZoneAlarm and Outpost. This is not a big issue except as described when you cannot ALT and TAB out of a game to give permission to your firewall to enable it. I think the sound is definately a great idea. Just to let you know that ZoneAlarms latest offering now has a “gaming” mode where it allows everything (and hence no “pop-ups”) however I have serious concerns using this and do not want to see it in this product either. I just wanted to point out my view and please implement a sound (the difficulty is coming up with something unique that will stand out if your in the middle of a FPS game - I dont know if it should be a sound or a voice (something like “alert” should draw your attention and is not used in games that I have heard). I am concerned that a BEEP etc… will just get lost in the game if you have lots of sound effects going on. Of course you could also make this a user choice - include several choices from BEEPS to voices and you can pick. I think BEEPS (or something similar) will be fine for all non-gamers so that would probably surfice for them but not for us Gamers :D. Hope this helps.

I’ve uninstall CPF a week ago.
And launch ZA Security Suite.
With their last update, one thing I’ve notice…
The POP(s) get’s more and more anoying this time! It stealing the “focus”, by creating a new “application window/tab/panel/whatever-it’s-called” at the taskbar.
…I was kinda “HUH!?”, when my display switch focus, and somebody just “Head-Shooting” me under my noose.

It is a solution, allright. At least the game’s not freeze.
…a solution for the DUMB-ARSH@@L3!

*. In real life, I don’t want any security-plaque invading my free time. …that’s why I choose to let CPF go.
*. This is what run’s on my mind when a pop-up POP; “Why in the world, would I or anybody else, want to know that?” (Quoted from YM’s audible)

You and you're family have a vacation at Bali beach.
Your daughter laugh happyly playing a ball game with you.

Suddenly!

"Sir, there's a cat bypassing runing behind you!"

HUH!?

"Sir, there's a bird flying over you. It might be infected with a bird flu!"

WHAT!?

"Sir, if you drink the mineral water, please use this glass. It's more save this way."

SHUT-UP!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~UN-INSTALL!
Here is your cat and the bird carrying bird flu:
Perfect answer!
While gaming is important and is undeniably a large market segment and will only increase its online presence, I don’t want to go online to do anything unless its safe.
Is there ANY firewall out there that gamers deem as acceptable?
Or do all gamers simply go to “Allow All” mode when the play on line?
CPF causes games to freeze. ZA causes the game to lose focus when it switches focus to the task bar entry for the alert.
Give us some clues, guys.
What firewall is good enough for online players?
Why is it good enough?
How does it handle alerts when a full screen graphic mode app has system focus?
If you can show Comodo what firewall works for game players, you helped point the CPF developers in the right direction for ALL users and we all end up with the best firewall.
Cheers,
NONE.
I wrote this, because I have faith to Egemen, Melih and their team.
I belief they’re trying to make a change in this game.
I’m not trying to harash their effort in any other way.
All I can show you, is how BAD those POP is. …is NOT for real life, anyway.
…I just want to show them, if you want to be “acceptable”, than stop being so intimidating.
If they start to go like, what Egemen just post… well be my guest.
I won’t have a grudge. But, hey! …your lost. Why? …there’s TONS! (ALOTS!) of firewall with the same feature. EVERYWHERE! …why use another hardcore-far-from-simple thing? Because it’s working?
…I’m not a regular porn site visitor. I don’t get infected that easyly. Plus I know alot of things that suposed to run on my machine (…not even close to that user from Egemen’s link). …come on…
You guys trying to introduce us how to use “THIS” so-called-new-standard-firewall. Yet, nothing’s new at-all. …it’s just another pop-up-phobia; from the user side. …it’s all over the forum. …and the answer is, “here’s your cat, bla…bla…?”
Took of your techie helmet for once and a while.
Get a user view, will ya!
Anyhow… nowadays, you can find many things out done the best firewall ever created-EVER, by a simple click! They’re call; RESTORE!
Have you heard things like Deep Freeze, or Fortress Grand Clean Slate?
If you have, I’m using it right now. Without a single firewall installed.
…and no, I’m not afraid someone stole my credit card’s ID, or any of those kinda thing.
Like I said, I’m not a regular porn site visitor.
I know every site I visit verywell.
That’s my responsibility.
…so it works.
…so it make a noise.
…so?
Does it have to make a noise?
Does it have to pop?
…that’s a simple question.
Or isn’t?
*. Perfect answer? …get real.
*. How should a firewall deliver it’s message? …don’t you read my posts???
Chill for a sec, please.
I wasn’t having a go at you or any other online gamer.
All I wanted to know was if CPF is not suitable in its current state, is there a firewall that is suitable for online gaming? If so, what is it called, so I can have a look at how they handle alerts that occur when a full screen game has focus. Judging by your post, there isn’t a firewall that easily handles online gaming while the game is in full screen mode and the user can’t see or acknowledge the alert.
One way I can think of that could handle this was if, when the alert popped up, the system gave the user focus to the popup and the user could press ALT-A to Allow or ALT-B to block. The only problem with this method is that the user has got no idea what they are blocking or accepting, and the firewall has no means of knowing if the object that caused the popup is related to the online game or whether it’s from something else (malicious or otherwise).
If the answer is to set the firewall (regardless of what firewall) to “Allow All” and rely on a restore utility, this beggars the question, why have the firewall at all? If the restore utility is good enough, then why suffer the 8-10ms lag that any software firewall will induce in your internet connection?
I can’t see an easy way around these issues.
I unfortunately can’t take my techie hat off. Not because I don’t ever, or I’m a geek. Merely because it’s a technical problem that needs technical thought applied to reach a resolution. I game as much as the next guy (my wife and son own a 40 station internet cafe and I think I’m their best customer ;)) so I do appreciate the importance of online gaming. I just happen to think that the on-going security of my hard earned dollars takes precedence over my convenience. Not having a shot at you, just explaining why I keep trying to figure this out.
Your ongoing contributions to this are just as valid as mine, if not more so, as you obviously know what you’re talking about and are obviously passionately into gaming. I appreciate your problem, I just don’t care much for your 'tude, dude. But let’s leave that behind and focus on the problem.
We’re all here to try and find an answer.
Hi,
First of all, we are going to make CPF game friendly. And I can understand your complaints from this point of view. This is a must and will be implemented.
But your comments sounded not specific to gaming problems. You seemed to be irritated about the questions CPF asks.
What I dont understand is :
  • CPF has many options that you can always disable. First of all we have “Automatically approve safe applications”. You could have selected it.
  • All types of CPF popups can be disabled by simply going to “Security->Advanced” section. For example, if you dont want to see COM/OLE Automation type popups, you could always disable it. You can even disable normal popups.
And all these options are at most 3 mouse clicks away.
You guys trying to introduce us how to use "THIS" so-called-new-standard-firewall. Yet, nothing's new at-all. ...it's just another pop-up-phobia; from the user side. ...it's all over the forum. ...and the answer is, "here's your cat, bla..bla..?"
Unfortunately, you did not ask for help. You just told us you dumped our firewall for a weaker one. Thats your choice. But then you told us “Your firewall is warning me about a threat that is not as probable as a bird carrying the bird flu”. I am sorry but I found this attitude offensive and very discouraging. This did not sound like the comments of a gamer having gaming problems. So I pointed out the topic which proved that “There were other types of FLUs that were far more probable than bird FLU”.
I am afraid we have to provide enough security for our users, the security which is up-to-date and can keep up with the latest threats. So your security requirements are different. You could always modify CPF with no more than 3 clicks to fit your needs.
All in all, the last thing we would like is to lose the belief of someone who is enthusiastically trying to help us. We still appreciate your feedback and will always be relentless about the satisfaction of our users.
Do not feel offended (CLY) (CNY)
Thank you,
Egemen
I’m not offended. It’s just my way of saying things.
First, I never-EVER say CPF isn’t doing it’s job-done.
CPF does work. I’ve post that. …even make some FAQ on it.
…all I want to tell you guys, it’s that this pop-up game has to end. …sooner or later, pop-up will gone. If you want to steal a chance, then here’s your chance. Make a small leap by introducing a less intrusive pop-up. You’ll see how lovely it is in Yahoo! Messenger.
With that, you won’t have to decrepify any of your product’s core function (Like Egemen’s said; “…you can disable…”).
…I don’t want to disable “this” and “that”. Because it’s working! I got protected. I don’t want to lessen my security. It’s working. But… iritating & intimidating at the same time. Thus why I make a “Bali beach” metamorhp paragraph. Unfortunately, you guys got lost…
…and for the time being. I’ll let Fortress Grand’s Clean Slate handle my protection while waiting for the less intrusive CPF release.
…and Egemen, I don’t hate CPF.
*. Pop-ups get’s blocked everywhere nowadays. Even IE; “The King of Pop” have a simple blocker now.
I think its fair to say, we all want good things for CPF.
So lets all work together, afterall, we all want the same thing!
