Two points that deserve attention:
-
The tool disable the Security Center in Vista
-
After the Security Center enabled it no longer recognizes the avast antivirus
Best regards
Thanks at your , now too at me the problem is resolt Kind regards
I am contemplating removing the highest version of CIS 3.14 from my XP x64 system. I only have the firewall installed and use Avast5 as my AV. I have a few questions.
Are the links in the first post pointing to the latest versions of the cleanup toll?
Does the tool work under XP x64?
Would starting the uninstall in Safe Mode help ensure a clean removal?
Would a tool such as RegAssassin be useful for removing stubborn leftovers?
Before proceeding, any other sage advice would be welcomed.
ces5077,
if Comodo uninstalls normally then there is no point to look for “adventures” and using 3rd party tools.
SS26,
Thanks for your reply.
“If” and “normally” are the operative words in your response. After reading through this thread and others in these forums, I’m not confident of either. Although CIS 3.14 functions well, a search of Comodo registry entries using jv16 Power Tools 2010 yields nearly 135,000 items. This is starting to bog down my system boot times. BTW, I only have a limited number of apps installed and rarely install new software.
I’d really like to remove leftovers to ensure a trouble-free migration to something else. And I really don’t want to do a fresh OS install.
There aren’t even that many items created during install, can you please post the scan results?
I suspect something fishy here…
Yes, they are. However, the tool hasn’t been updated since July. I have been away from these forums for a long time, but will update this tool shortly. Also planning on converting it into a GUI-based version.
Yes.
Could do, although I think only a few files should be active in memory (namely the shell extension for CAVS allowing right-click scanning of a file/folder) and unable to remove. This is why you should run the tool twice, to make sure previously locked files are deleted, but of course, booting in Safe Mode would be another option.
I personally don’t use any registry cleaning software, but if you feel like doing so, there shouldn’t be any serious harm in doing so.
Ragwing,
Thank you so much for direct answers to my questions.
FYI: RegAssassin is provided by Malwarebytes and changes the permissions of registry entries allowing their deletion.
I will probably wait until you update the tool before preceding.
Ronny,
I would love to post the results, but I’d rather not register with an online image hosting service in order to do so. I have the screenshot but no simple way to pass it along. It would be nice if I could just insert it as an attachment into this post.
Just before posting, I ran Registry Finder in jv16 PT 2010 using Comodo as the search word and it found 134506 entries.
If your game, go to Macecraft Software and download a trial version. Try it on your system and let us know what you find.
If you edit your post, and go to More options you may browse your computer to upload the results
Hope this helps
Jake
Thanks Jacob,

Included here are the results of a registry search using Comodo as the sole search parameter. The original text file was nearly 19 MB. In order to post here, I had to delete 1/3 of the entries found.
Does anyone else find this bloat problematic?

From what I can tell by reading the 1/3 is that you are making extremely detailed custom rules in configuration 0.
Given that fact you you will have (considerable) delays when saving a rule. How long does it take for CIS to save rules when you make a new rule?
EricJH,
It’s not me making custom rules. I configured CIS long ago and haven’t touched it since. I do purge Firewall and Defense+ when necessary.
The 1/3 refers to the approximately 45,000 registry entries I deleted from the .txt file in order to post it in this forum.
It seems to me that anytime anything on my computer is upgraded or updated, CIS writes to the registry without cleaning up after itself. As far as delays are concerned, I have noticed none. My boot times seem a bit longer though.
I would be curious to know what the devs think about this. If it’s something I’m doing, I’d certainly like to know what it is so I can put a stop to it.
Out of curiosity. What version of CIS are you running? The uninstallers usually seem to be doing a good job but your case makes me curious.
How do you usually go from the one version of CIS to the other?
Using the latest version of CIS 3.14 (Firewall/Defense+ only).
I haven’t tried uninstalling it yet. I use this computer for trading and can’t afford any miscues. I just want to be prepared if problems ensue. If I uninstall, I will not be choosing Comodo in the future. To avoid potential conflicts, a squeaky clean uninstall seems like a good idea.
Any theories? How many Comodo-related entries does your registry contain?
Currently many as I just did a clean install the new v5.3.
If you want to be prepared for eventualities. Start with exporting your active configuration from your old and trusted 3.14; this way you can always return to your old 3.14 including your configuration.
Have the clean up tool present. Read Upgrading to the Newest Version of CIS - what to do if you have difficulties carefully for reference.
Keep in mind you cannot import your old v3.14 configuration in v5 due to too many changes under the hood.
When talking about production environment it is a common practice to test steps like these on a stand alone machine.
Once installed v5.3 will automatically make rules for quite a few programs these days. It has become very quiet in default settings. The white list and Trusted Vendor List have grown considerably.
When using Safe Mode safe programs will get standard rules. The rules for those programs are not stored anymore with default settings; that is done to keep the list of rules small. Big amount of rules makes storing a new rule slow. Hence the choice to keep it small.
The automatic sandbox will run every unknown program sandboxed.
Let me know if you have more questions before making the step.
