I recently upgraded to Avast5 antivirus. Due to the unorthodox manner by which Avast5 pushes engine and definition updates, CIS is generating registry entries at an alarming rate. Most of these eventually point to paths within the Avast5 folder that will no longer exist. I just deleted 844 useless entries from my XP x64 registry and I’ve only had Avast5 for less than a month. Similar behavior also seems to be associated with other recurring processes such as Windows Update. It would be nice if CIS had the ability to clean up after itself. The capability to automatically purge CIS’s various components would also be useful.
More to the point is why all this data is stored in the registry in the first place!
The registry isn’t the place to store volatile data of this nature.
