Dell Vostro 410 desktop, Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz, 3 GB RAM
32 bit XP Pro SP3, IE8, fully updated
Windows Firewall disabled (this machine is part of a domain and has hardware firewall only)
CIS 3.8.65951.477 installed with AV only
- AV enabled
- D+ disabled and permanently deactivated
No other security software installed
Logged in as a user with administrative rights. CIS tray shield shows red-circle-with-a-line-through-it No symbol instead of green check. Under the “Summary” tab, “System Status” shows a red circle with an X instead of the green circle with a white check. The error message is “The network firewall is not functioning properly! Please run the diagnostics utility to fix the problem.”
Diagnostics does not find any problem. The attached screenshot shows the CIS GUI after running the diagnostics.
The error state goes away after a reboot.
I have seen this error several times. I suspect it may be triggered by logging into the machine remotely using Remote Desktop, but I haven’t been able to find the steps to reproduce it reliably.
