CIS causing very high CPU temps

Hello there! I’ve recently returned to using CIS from MSE and I am having an issue with CIS causing my CPU to nearly hit my CPU maximum safe operating temperature.

My CPU is AMD Athlon II 635 X4 2.9GHz running with the stock heatsink+fan. Idle temps are ~18C-20C, ~35C-40C when gaming.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64 with Balanced power profile.

The maximum safe operating temp range, according to a support request via AMD, is between 55C-71C.

When running a My Computer scan in CIS, my temp according to Speccy shoots up beyond 55C and nearly reaches the absolute maximum safe temp for my CPU by just a few degrees (last scan I ran the temp was reaching 68C).

CIS is the only security product that produces this issue. MSE never did, and Norton before that never did. MBAM, SAS and Spybot don’t produce this issue either…it’s just CIS.

Yes, often the scan causes CPU usage to skyrocket and makes my lappy unusable as well. However this will be probably changed in V6 I believe :azn:

Not really sure what this has to do with my thread, since the title clearly mentions TEMPERATURE and not USAGE, as well as I never mentioned it made my computer unusable.

Doesn’t more CPU usage mean higher temperature since it needs to process more stuff?

CPU usage and CPU temperature are directly linked.

Can you tell us in what scenarios CIS causes high CPU usage>

Also. Please make sure that there are no left overs of previously uninstalled security programs around. Not all uninstallers do a proper job. Left over applications, drivers or services can cause all sort of “interesting effects”.

Try using removal tools for those programs to remove them. Here is a list of removal tools for common av programs: ESET Knowledgebase .
