OK, I do NOT have the run cache builder checkbox checked, and even when I did, CAVWP.EXE still runs at random times, and ties up about 450Mb of my memory. :-TD As I only have 1Gb of RAM, this is VERY maddening, as when it is running I essentially have to COMPLETELY STOP using computer until it gets done. >:(
What I want to know is two things:
Is CAVWP.EXE really needed to run?
if not, can I prevent it from running EVER?
Any help here would be GREATLY appreciated.
If unable to stop such heavy use of what little RAM I have, I will have to seel another means of protecting my system. Which would be disappointing as I REALLY LOVE Comodo Internet Security Premium.
cavwp.exe: When a scan is run, one instance is always dedicated to realtime scanning.
You can see a full list of what the different processes do here.
I do not know why it would use so much memory though, sorry. :embarassed: I’ll think about it and tell you if I can think of something, hopefully someone else will know what to do.
Do you have any other security software on your computer?
For those which used to be installed on your computer, but are now removed, please run the removal tool for those programs. They can be found on this page.
Please see if that helps, and let me know if there are any other security programs on your computer, even if you don’t think they could be causing issues.
@Chiron
Have long since removed all traces of any previous security software.
As to any “other” security programs, no memory resident nor any that load anything in at start.
I am just wondering if this just isn’t some undocumented bug/flaw in CIS Premium?
According to the link provided by SanyaIV, basically looks like it also has something to do with “real-time” virus scans.
Sad part is, last time it ran and sucked almost all remaining memory, all I was doing was some web surfing at TigerDirect and NewEgg. ???
I am unsure where to go from here, as I do like having the firewall with HIPS, I am thinking MAYBE finding some other AV, maybe see IF I can find one that plays nice with Comodo FW.
What you are experiencing is definitely not normal. I believe this is either a bug or a subtle conflict. I will ask the other Mods if they have any thoughts on this.
If it is not updating or running a schedule scan and cache builder is disabled I would not expect this behaviour. If it is running for multiple minutes at a time then it very much resembles cache builder/cache cleaner behaviour.
Can you check the Task and AV logs of the past couple of weeks to see if may be CIS started cache cleaner?
On a sidenote. Once cache cleaner runs it won’t stop or throttle down when system becomes active again. It will wait for a moment when the system is quiet but it does not scale back when system resources are needed elsewhere. Not that much of a problem on my quad core AMD Phenom II based system where it maxes out only one core but on other hardware it can be taxing… :-\
How does the high resource usage influence the performance of your system? I am inclined to assume it is the strain on the CPU that is the biggest influence rather than memory usage unless it forces your system heavily into paging. In the latter case memory usage is a problem other than that it just uses a lot RAM.
@EricJH
No it was not updating, it done that about 1 hour earlier. I have ALL scheduled items DISABLED.
Logs show NO mention of cache builder…EVER, and the checkbox for run cache builder when idle is NOT checked.
As to hardware, I have a SINGLE core Pentium 4 2.2 GHz, with 1 Gb RAM.
It takes up at time ALL remaining memory, more than likely causing the system to go to swap. And when it :peaks out", I cannot do anything with system.
:embarassed: As to hardware, I “inherited” a Dell Dimension 2350 desktop. And currently cannot afford to do ANY upgrading. Trust me, it REALLY sucks.
