CAVWP.exe CPU use higher than expected [M220] [v6]

A. THE BUG/ISSUE: After a short period of time CAVWP.exe beings using a abnormally large amount of cpu resources and does not shutoff. Even when the system is under a full load.

  1. What actually happened or U actually saw: CAVWP.exe constantly using 25% - 30% of my cpu even when my pc is not idle I’m unable to terminate it through the CIS task manager or via windows task manager. Only disabling cache builder and restarting my pc stops it.
  2. If not obvious, what U expected to happen or see: Cache builder running only when idle and turning off when under the system is under load.
  3. Can U reproduce the problem & if so how reliably?: Yes it happens everytime i enable CIS to run cache builder when idle. Although the time for it to start happening varies from a few hours to well over a day.
  4. If you can, precise steps to reproduce it. If not say what you did before it happened: On my system all i have to do is enable “run cache builder when computer is idle” under advanced settings and it starts whenever the cache builder starts to run.
  5. If a software compatibility problem have U tried the conflict FAQ?:
  6. Any software except CIS/OS involved? If so give name, exact version, & download link:
  7. Any other information, eg your guess at the cause, how U tried to fix it etc:
  8. Always attach: Diagnostics file, Killswitch processes (See 3-4 posts down), dump (if freeze/crash). If complex: CIS logs & config, screenshots, video. Attached.

B. YOUR SETUP (Likely the same from issue to issue, users can copy forward)

  1. CIS version & configuration: CIS 6.0.260739.2674 proactive security.
  2. Modules enabled & level. Defense+/HIPS, Autosandbox/BBlocker, Firewall, & AV: Proactive security setup via chiron’s guide but with HIPS enabled.
  3. Have U updated (without uninstall) from a previous version of CIS: No
    a. if so, have U tried a a clean reinstall - if not please do?: n/a
  4. Have U imported a config from a previous version of CIS: No
    b. if so, have U tried a standard config - if not please do: n/a
  5. Have U made any other major changes to the default config? (egs here.): No
  6. OS version, SP, 32/64 bit, UAC setting, account type, & virtual machine used: Windows 7 Home premium SP1 64bit, UAC disabled, Admin, none.
  7. Other security & sandbox software a) currently installed: Hitman pro and malwarebyes free. b) installed since last OS install: sandboxie and CIS 5.12.

Thank you very much for your bug report in standard format. We very much appreciate the effort you have made to document this bug.

We are sorry to trouble you further but there are some items of information missing or unclear in your post

A. 8. Always attach: Killswitch processes with CPU and RAM columns showing at the time the issue is occurring

B 3. Have U updated (without uninstall) from a previous version of CIS: n/a - just to check do you mean no?
a. if so, have U tried a a clean reinstall - if not please do?: n/a
B. 4. Have U imported a config from a previous version of CIS: n/a - just to check do you mean no?
b. if so, have U tried a standard config - if not please do: n/a
B 5. Have U made any other major changes to the default config? (egs here.): - just to check do you mean no?

The reasons we need these items of information, though they may not seem directly relevant to the issue are explained here.

We would be very grateful if you would add these items of information so we can forward this post to the format verified board, where it is more likely to get fixed. You can find assistance using red links in the Format and here. If you need further help please ask a mod. If you do not add the information after a week we will forward this post to the non-format board. If this happens we will tell you how to rectify this if you wish to.

In the current process we will normally leave it up to you whether you want to make a report which includes all necessary information or not. We may remind you if we think a bug of particular importance.

Many thanks again

always after a stand by one cavwp.exe is using 100% of one core.

what to do?

Have you increased the maximum file size scanned from the default 40Mb?

Not fixed in 2708.

Thanks for the feedback, tracker updated

Hello!
I realized that the utilization bug of cavwp.exe is not resolved after the recent updates. On Windows 8 x64 I get 15-25 % utilization and on Window 7 x32 I get two processes of cavwp.exe, one with 5-10% and the second with 15-50% utilization!! What’s going on with this? When will this bug be resolved?
Thanks a lot!

Hi bobo1704,

This might be related to some process in your system.
Can you please provide a full bug report and try to find what files cavwp.exe are touching by using sysinternals.com tool called “process monitor”.

You can put a filter on process cavwp.exe and then see what it’s doing.

I attach a 7zipped log file from process monitor during a 25% utilization on Widows 7. I don’t see anything strange, but the utilization is high enough.
Thank you again.

Thank you very much for your issue report.

We would very much appreciate it if you would be kind enough to edit your report to put it in the standard format and add any additional information requested, as this will make it much easier for the developers to diagnose and fix the problem.

The reasons we need all the information in the format, though they may not seem directly relevant to the issue are explained here.

If you are able to do this we will forward this post to the format verified board, where it is more likely to get looked at by developers. You can find assistance using red links in the format and here. If you need further help please ask a mod. If you do not add the information after a day or two we will forward this post to the non-format board. If this happens we will tell you how to rectify this if you wish to.

In the current process we will normally leave it up to you whether you want to make a report in standard format or not. However we may remind you if we think a bug of particular importance.

Thanks very much for your issue report, which is much appreciated.

We have moved it to the non-format bugs board for the moment, because it is not in the standard format or too much of the information we normally need to replicate a problem and fix it is still missing.

We realize some people may not have the time to do an issue report in standard format, and therefore offer the option of a non-format report instead. But the problem is much more likely to be fixed promptly if you edit your first post to create an issue report which reflects the guidance in the Standard Format topic. (You can copy and paste the format from this topic). The reasons we ask for the information we do are given in this post.

You can get your report moved to the format verified issues board simply by ensuring that it reflects the guidance in the standard format topic, and PM’ing a mod who is active on the bug board.

Best wishes

Can you please check and see if this is fixed with the newest version? Please let us know whether it is fixed or you are still experiencing the problem.

Thank you.

Not Fixed In 2813.

I reported a similar bug with V6 https://forums.comodo.com/format-verified-issue-reports-cis/cavwpexe-abusing-system-resources-m220-v6-t90677.0.html;msg653616#msg653616

Not sure if our problems are related.

Agreed, I have procdump monitoring cavwp on my machine, set to trigger at 75% of CPU. It is triggering about 10x per day on an 8-core 3.4 Ghz i7 machine. Please PM me for dumps taken at point of high CPU. However the freezing this appeared to cause in previous versions is improved for me on this machine.

Could QA please confirm what is expected behavior?

Best wishes

I’ll merge for the moment anyway, if that’s OK

Any news?

Can you please check and see if this is fixed with the newest version (6.2.282872.2847)? Please let us know whether it is fixed or you are still experiencing the problem.

Thank you.
