CAV install failed - how to uninstall

My attempted installation of CAV failed - the software was not responding after about 2/3 of install & froze up. I closed the install windows. (Norton 360 was installed but turned off prior to CAV installation). Now the machine takes forever to boot windows … can’t get online , etc. -
I want to uninstall CAV but there is no uninstaller available. Computer does not show presence of CAV EXCEPT that if I right click, option to use CAV is displayed for a scan.

At this point I want to remove CAV and Norton both. help please?

sorry, I failed to say that I am using WinXP SP2 on a Compaq Pentium 4 with 1 mb ram. Internet connection is wired. :-[

Hi, sorry for your problems. Was Norton only shut down for the moment, not permanently disabled? If so, it’ll continue to load with Windows which may cause a conflict with CAVS.

You could try to start Windows in safe mode to uninstall. (after turning power on, press F8 right before Windows starts to load)

Yes, Norton was disabled, not permanently uninstalled, when I attempted the installation. Unable to do much of anything then, I re-booted - and things were worse. That likely was Norton turning on with the new Windows boot - plus CAV was present tho not at all in the Install /uninstall list in control panel.

I meant permanently disabled (shut down), not uninstalled. So anyway, if it loaded with Windows together with CAVS, then you get conflicts.

You didn’t get any Uninstall shortcut in the CAVS start menu folder? (I haven’t used it for I while so I’m not sure how it looks like)

Perhaps Revo Uninstaller could help you get rid of those programs.

Update:

I worked on the computer problem for a couple of hours yesterday - mostly the icon was busy and I had to wait to do anything! Unfortunately I wasn’t able to accomplish much …

  1. No uninstall for CAV is or ever has been evident (the program locked up b4 completing install)

  2. Norton 360 will not uninstall in safe mode - it requires going into Windows reg mode. Then it locks up after I select uninstall Norton 360 from the Control Panel/Add Remove Window.
Before I installed CAV, the Norton was perm. disabled but not uninstalled.

  3. Even if I go into processes of task mgr, and delete all CAV titled programs, the Norton uninstall will not function.

I’ve never used the Revo Uninstall program - can you tell me what to expect - or what dangers exist? At this time I can still pull files off the computer using windows explorer (I think) , but other than that, the c omputer is not functional.

thanks!

Hi, what troublesome problems you have.

I can’t tell why there’s no uninstaller present for CAVS. As for Norton, have you tried their removal tool?

Revo; I’ve only used it once (I found out that I already have other programs to accomplish what it does, like registry- and file cleaning). I’d guess that the list of programs to uninstall that populates in Revo, is based on what Windows already gives you in your Control Panel’s Add/Remove Programs. So if it’s not present there (for CAVS), it might not be shown in Revo either. The chance is, if you can use “Hunter Mode” (as described on their website). It’s just a guess.

Cleaning traces with a program, after uninstalling, means that the program edits the Windows registry. This is always a risk. But at this point, with the problems you seem to have, I can’t think of any better solution than trying to uninstall CAVS with Revo and trying to get rid of Norton with their own removal tool.

I really hope that Norton removal tool, and Revo, can help you solving these problems.

Is there any chance that running a system restore through safe mode work?
I’ve done this a few times with other programs, most recently with NOD32 and it conflicted with another antivirus when it installed. I wasn’t able to uninstall it at the time because the computer would lock up before I could do anything,

Understandably though this isn’t really an option if too much time has passed since he did the installation…

:BNC the system restore worked. I used add/remove programs and removed any visible antilvirus or antispy programs … but most wouldn’t uninstall properly.
I didn’t see any sign of CAV. I put on Avast before going onto web. Then I went to Norton Removal Tool - and the first half worked.
I don’t know how to do the registry removal part of the Norton removal tool tho. So Im reading up on that. Learning more than I ever wanted to know!

Do you think that CAV has registry entries which I need to remove - I’ve never “uninstalled” the partial installation.

Glad to hear that, credits to Kyuubi! (:CLP)

Yes, I think CAVS would leave traces, like almost all other programs. But now you shouldn’t have any traces since you successfully used the system restore.

HELP!
A grey rectangle in the center of the lcd screen has returned ; it contains a grey sad face and a green smiley face - it covers any other program on screen and is difficult to read info ; I can’t get it to disappear. I had thought that this was a message re: network connection - but it appears not.

It was on screeen before I did the system restore, and is back now. Otherwise, the system is running well - but I don’t know what to do about the grey rectgangle now. I did a check on Google but found no relevant info.

Does anyone recognize this ? is it a virus?

I say this w/o knowing all about your circumstances, but you might have a poltergeist of some kind. A strange item like this is not part of any legitimate software I know of. Are you able to do any thing on the computer now? I would try to clean up your computer any way you can, but I would keep the option of re-formating your C drive and reinstalling XP as an option. I believe from your previous posts that Norton was your firewall–was it your Anti-Virus as well? If you uninstalled Norton any “baddies” you had in your quarantine files may have been unleashed on your computer (courtesy of Norton’s notions of security). Maybe you could provide details of what security software is currently on your computer. Post that, and while waiting for a response on the forum, track down your XP re-install disc.

You may have something there…the rectangle goes away after a reboot, but it has occurred several times in the past. Currently, the desktop is running well and completely usable. I was unable to “uninstall” CAV since it never finished installation, but I did run the NAV uninstall successfully after the system restore. [I did not go into the registry to eliminate any NAV traces there tho] Then I installed Avast, but uniinstalled it subsequently (wife didn’t want to learn it) and went back to Zonealarm INternet Security (which wife was familiar with) on a trial basis. In a couple of weeks I’ll have to make some more permanent decision, and we’ll see if there is any re-occurence on the grey rectangle with the sad&smiley face disrupting the computer screen. I did earlier run both the Avast and Zonelabs AntiVirus scan and no virus or spyware was identified on the system.

Unfortunately, the WinXP install disk is on the D drive of the Compaq desktop (2.2 P4, 1 gb ram) …so even if I re-installed (groan!) the “poltergeist” might re-appear … which reminds me, I should check to see that the D drive was scanned … I’m not sure if the scans were set up to do all drives or just C drive … worth re-checking tho.

If there is no reoccurence, I will leave system alone… but if there is another (free) spyware/AV which would be best to re-check system with, I will gladly run another check on system. Any suggestions for such software ? - sorry, I’m afraid to try to re-install CAV after this episode (tho the problem was likely NortonAV).

Thanks for continued help!
