Can't choose Email Client from Predefined Policies.

Hi guys,

I’m using the latest version of CIS and when I start email client (Windows Live Mail 2009) I get the message from the firewall, like I suppose to, asking if I want to allow wlmail.exe to access the Internet. Everything is okay up until here. However, unlike starting any web browser where I get a selection in Predefined Firewall Policies to treat the application as a web browser I don’t get one to treat the application as email client.

The policy for an email client is present in the Predefined Firewall Policies section however it does not show up in the drop down menu when the information pop-up window comes on. I even tried reinstalling CIS and creating another custom predefined policy for email client but it didn’t work. Every other predefined policy shows up in the drop down menu with the exception of email client and any user-made custom policy. I had the same problem with the previous version of CIS and on my both computers (one of them freshly reformatted). What’s also strange is that it did show up only once when I was starting some other application (I don’t remember which one). But it never came up again.

Go to Network Security Policy (Firewall → Advanced) and edit the rule for Windows Live Mail and choose a custom policy. See if the email policy shows up under copy from Predefined Security Policies. When that doesn’t help try copy from Another Application.

Otherwise write down the rules from the email policy and add them manually.

Thank you for replying. I tried your suggestions. Unfortunately they didn’t work. For starters WLM wasn’t even on the list even though I started it many times. So I clicked on “Add…” button. Then I clicked on “Edit…” button and tried both methods “Use a Custom Policy” → “Copy From” → “Predefined Security Policies” → “Email Client” and “Use a Predefined Policies” → “Email Client” (and of course Apply) and it keeps asking me what I want to do every time I start WLM. After manually entering it, it is on the list but it just keep doing the same thing over and over… and of course it is still impossible to select “Email Client” from a pop-up window. This is quite annoying since the “Email Client” is the only entry that doesn’t show in the drop down menu. I have 2 laptops and 2 desktops and the same problem on all of them.
