Bug in virus: Start-up disk asked for repeatedly when viewing websites

When attempting to view websites or use programs a small box appears repeatedly asking me to insert “start-up” disk for Windows XP. I continuosly have to hit cancel to get these little windows from popping up on my screen. I at first thought it was because Comodo’s firewall was competeing with the Windows firewall so I removed the Comodo program & reloaded it with only Comodo virus protection, but this problem continues to happen…?

errr, have you tried enabling windows firewall & disable CIS to make sure it’s CIS that cause the issue?

Without the virus protection the problem is gone… I downloaded the virus protection twice (as I mentioned) & both times (once with Comodo Firewall & once without) the problem occurs…
TY for your response.

Dave

When you have CIS installed and the problem occurs again can you provide us with screenshots of the AV logs and Defense + logs? They can be found under AV → View Antivirus Events and Defense + → Common Tasks → View Defense + Alerts.

Ok… I’ll give it a try!

TY again!

CIS= what I’m running now correct? This is the anti-virus program that is apparently causing my computer to think it needs to download all the start-up disks as-if I just bought the computer…

It happens everytime I attempt to open a webpage or a program, (It happened when I opened your website), but there was no mention of it on the page you sent me to “AV logs”.

How do you take a snap-shot of the AV-logs…? I tried to right-click & copy the one thing that was there from Jan 15th, but “copy” doesn’t work.

Dave

Can you post a screenshot of the alert you are getting? Windows is apparently missing a file that it needs.

Can you tell us a bit more about your XP installation? Which Service Pack is installed? Are all Windows updates installed? I assume you are using Internet Explorer for browsing? What version of IE are you using?

Not sure which IE I have & I’m really getting ready to remove the virus protection & not bother you anymore… I’ll give you this info. & hopefully we can resolve this issue…

I have automatic Windows updates so doubt if that is the problem, but I’ll re-update.

The prompt says: “Dell Resource CD, insert disc & please wait while Windows reconfigures Dell Resource CD”.

Again, TY…

Do you have such a CD? What happens when you insert it?

To know if you are using the latest and recommended version, version 8, simply go to Windows Update and see if there is an update to move to IE8 or not.

Also look under Defense + → Common Tasks → View Defense + Events → and make a screenshot of that and post it here. This is to see if may be D+ is playing a role.

Nope… no such CD. Purchased Computer from Dell, but none of the CD’s had this notation…

Take Care!

I missed your question on how to post a screenshot. Here is the tutorial.

How to post a screenshot?

To copy a screenshot of the active window push alt+print screen to copy the active window to the clipboard (pushing print screen will copy the complete window to the clipboard not just the active window). The window is now copied to the clipboard. Paste the image in any image editing program, Paint, Paint.net, the Gimp etc. Use the “crop” function to resize the canvas to size of the image. Now save the file as 32 bits png image.

At the forum push the reply button. Or when using the Quick reply type some text and push the preview button.

Underneath the text box click on Additional options. Push the Choose button and navigate to the file and select it. When you want to post more images click on the more attachments link.

When done typing push the Post or Preview button.

Now you can show us the AV and D+ logs.

Have you tried inserting the disks you did receive? Maybe one of them is the resource CD even if it isn’t labeled as such.
