Symptom:
- You’re windows desktop and icons disappear after
removing Binkiland malware.
Recommended Troubleshooting steps:
I. Open the Task Manager and End “RunOnce.exe” from Task Manager:
a. open Task Manager putting the following command “taskmgr.exe” in the run command box.
b. Identify the process named “Runonce.exe”. right click on it, and select “End Process”
c. Once that process is ended, you will find all desktop icons loaded fine.
II. Open the Regedit and search for the “RunOnce” folder.
a. Click Start, click Run, type “regedit” and then click OK. This will open the Registry Editor.
i. It is strongly advised to backup your Windows Registry prior to making any changes to it. Follow
the following steps to backup your registry.
ii. In Registry Editor, Click File, select Export, ensure that the correct file is located and click the
registry key or subkey that you want to back up.
iii. Name the file with your Current Time and Date, Click on Save. (refer to image in url: http://safe.mn/Uxc~)
b. It can be found at the following location:
“HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce"
c. Delete this key in the registry
d. You will find some junk key entry similar to “C:\Windows\SysWOW64\wscript.exe /E:vbscript /Binkiland.”
III. Delete the Binkiland folder in the roaming folder:
a. This means that this “file” will run from this folder “Appdata/Roaming”
b. Open the Run command, using Ctrl + R, type in the following text “%APPDATA%”, this will open the
ROAMING Folder.
c. Look for the Binkiland folder. Once you have found it, delete the folder named “Binkiland”.
d. Restart the PC. The desktop icons should now be restored as normal.
