b00*****.cav has disappeared but CIS is still working / updating

Hi there.

After manually updating to 10.2.0.6526 via offline installer on 21 March and using a backup of the database (b0028695.cav) to manually update the virus DB, CIS has since ditched the b00*****.cav file(s) altogether. The AV component is still working (or so it says), saying the latest DB version is 28816 but the only .cav file in /Program Files/COMODO/COMODO Internet Security/scanners is the original one - bases.cav - which is the one from the orginal installer and only 9879KB in size.
The b0028695.cav mentioned above was taken as a backup from the /Program Files/COMODO/COMODO Internet Security/scanners folder (like I have done many times before when manually updating).

So here’s what happened;

  1. I manually updated to 10.2.0.6526. The update took without a hitch as usual but when I went to back up the .cav file a week later I noticed it had not changed, i.e; it was still named b0028695.cav and was exactly the same size
  2. I checked that CIS had updated its virus database and performed a couple of updates over the next day or so, monitoring the status of b0028695.cav to see if it changed its name after applying the updates as it always had done before. No change was observed
  3. I then decided to delete b0028695.cav from its folder (see above) to see what would happen. I deleted it without a problem, expecting CIS to download another one to replace it but no, until now it has still kept updating to the latest definitions (every 6hrs as I have set it to do) but it has not made nor replaced the old b00*****.cav file
    Note: I usually back up the b00*****.cav files every week or so just so I have a copy if anything goes wrong or I do a manual update of the program

Has anyone had a similar experience? I have tried to do scans and they have completed without any hitch so at least on the surface it appears to be running properly. And as I have mentioned, it updates to the latest definitions without a hitch. Has Comodo changed the location of the b00*****.cav file? I can’t see it in any of Windows temp folders.

Has Comodo changed the location of the b00*****.cav file?
Yes it changed to C:\ProgramData\Comodo\Cis\signatures

The Comodo team should update their website help / download pages and announce this in the forum (I searched for it here using the old full path but found nothing).

If files in the old directory “\Program Files\COMODO\COMODO Internet Security\scanners” are not needed, perhaps the program should perform a little housekeeping and avoid this confusion?
