allow link to firefox from thunderbird

I am a completee newbie with Comodo firewall. I have installed it and got Firefox and Thunderbird both working satisfactorily, except for one function: I can’t link to a web page from Thundebird when I click on a link in a message. It ignores it.

I have reviewed the rules, the help, the manual, etc., etc, and I still can’t get it to work.

I can get it to work if I copy the link address in the message and paste it into the URL field, but I can’t get it to work the easy way, where I just click on the link. What am I ■■■■ wrong?

Any suggestions?

Thanks…

Tom

hmm, doesn’t actually sound anything like comodo fault here. Check your windows default programs for opening URLs (Simply ‘default programs’ at your start menu and make sure Firefox is the default browser).

got here similar setup also and see no problems Firefox running as usual ‘Web Browser’ (predefined firewall rule) and thunderbird running as ‘Email client’. There is ‘web mail’ ofcourse for thunderbird which would require an ‘HTTP Ports’ set to be added as allowed TCP Out bound connection to be functional.

you said: “thunderbird running as ‘Email client’. There is ‘web mail’ ofcourse for thunderbird which would require an ‘HTTP Ports’ set to be added as allowed TCP Out bound connection to be functional.”

I mentioned that I was a Comodo newbie! However, as an old mainframe programmer once upon a time, I’m not sure if what I did was correct or not. I’m using Thunderbird as an email client and added a tcp out line to the predefined email client policy to allow TCP out from any port to any port.

Is that what you had in mind or must I do something else? Thunderbird itself seems to be operating normally. It allowed direct links to a browser before I installed Comod, but no longer does, even with my addition. Obviously, something else is necessary and I haven’t a clue what!

Thanks…

Tom

No…

There is an predefined rule ‘email client’ at comodo > firewall > advanced > network security policy > search the ‘thunderbird.exe’ > copy rules from ‘email client’(predefined) > add extra rule while at it “TCP, Out, Any, Any, Any, ‘A Set of Ports’ and HTTP Ports” > OK > OK.

This will allow email client functions + basic HTTP ports including SSL.

but what I was saying is that this problem probably is not in CIS or if it for some insane reason would actually be only thing I can think of would be something like ‘Defence+’ not allowing to open the browser with parameters from Thunderbird. (honestly man I think this whole Defence+ should be forbidden to all, hehe. Never used never will myself absolute horrid comparing to something like Spybot.

Instead I still suggest you check your Windows Default program for HTTP URLs in your windows control panel and make sure it is Firefox.

Hi,

Thanks for your help.

I think I have mine set up as you mentioned, other than the line “HTTP ports”. This APPEARS to be for webmail, which I don’t use.

It still can’t link from Thunderbird to Firefox, which I could do before I installed Comodo. I’m sure I’ve done something wrong and I’ll continue to dig (although I’m getting a little tired it!). I even (gasp!) tried reading the Comodo manual. Still no luck. The only way I can go to links is to copy the link location and then paste it into my browser.

Oh well. Back to digging…

Tom

Some mail clients deliberately act this way by default on security behalf (it is the case with “The Bat”, not reading nor linking to whatever html link inside the mail client is such a security is enforced).

In your particular situation, i believe that more a defense+ then a firewall rule is the issue: in order for your link to work, Thunderbird must have been granted privileges to open Firefox.

It won’t help you much, as i almost never follow a link from inside my mail client, and consequently did not make a rule of such a request; but appropriate settings of defense+ so it asks you what it should do would most probably allow you to write the appropriate rule.

Wouldn’t this also work…??
