My wife got a spoof email today. It was “from” a very large U.S. tax preparation service offering a free jump drive if you bought next year’s software early. The very first clue that this was a scam was the V Shield utility showing this “Verisign protected” site was not valid! (thanks to the large unlocked padlock). Looking closer we could see that the tax preparation company’s logo was spoofed, the MasterCard and Visa logos were spoofed, and even the Verisign logo was wrong. The banditos also went to great lengths to create a multipage site with drop down menus (all copied [badly!] from the legitimate site). Of course, they also wanted our names, credit cards numbers, etc. I bet that part of the site would have worked great! I have notified the tax prep company, and I am spreading the word.
