A new private network has been detected!
The firewall has detected a new private network that your pc is about to join.

Hello everyone,
I just received the above message. I’ve been using Comodo a couple of weeks now, so my network is already established in the firewall. What does the message mean? Can I tell what network it is referring to? Should I allow it? Thanks

you can disable “search automatic for new networks” under “more — settings”.

a good philosophy is: ((when everything is fine)), dont allow things in general when you didnt requested them.

Ok. Thanks. Can I tell what this has detected? I was wondering if someone was trying to connect to my network with theirs.

You can tell, but it hinges around understanding the IP address that is displayed in the New Network dialogue.

It may mean something as simple as your neighbour (or someone close by) has just bought a wireless router and your wireless card can now detect it.

If the address shown was something like 169.254.X.X, it can mean that your PC wasn’t able to establish a connection to your wireless router in a timely manner.

Addresses in the 169.254.X.X range are special addresses (called APIPA) that are automatically set up in a system when that system is configured to get its IP configuration from a DHCP server (generally your router) and couldn’t do so in time. A New Network dialogue for a network in the 169.254.X.X range can also occur if you plug a PDA or smart phone in to your system.

Hope this helps,
Ewen
