COMODO Backup 4.1.3.51 Bug reports

Please post all bug reports & BSOD’s here.
Be sure to include:

  • Your Operating System (and whether it’s 32bit/64bit);
  • Other Backup & Security Software Installed;
  • How you produced the problem;
  • How you tried to resolve the problem;
  • Screen-shots with the error (if any);
  • if the issue is a BSOD, please post all the dump files in \Windows\Minidump folder (you can compress them)
  • if the issue is a crash, program stops responding or freezes please see this topic
  • if the issue is an error (not program crash or freeze) please run the dbgInfo.bat in installation folder and post the resulting cbu file.
  • Any other Additional Information (for example, any non-default settings used);

Problem: Online Backup failed early in process with Error [edit] 177 ‘resource is locked’, this happened on two separate occasions. Resource involved was not specified in log. [Edited]

Your Operating System (and whether it’s 32bit/64bit); Win7 x64

  • Other Backup & Security Software Installed; CIS, Keepass
  • How you produced the problem; Performed online backup using a profile, aborted early in process, performed same backup again in same boot session, got error
  • How you tried to resolve the problem; Restarted backup again (failed), Reboot and delete existing cloud b/u file then retry backup (succeeded).
  • Screen-shots with the error (if any); [Edit] Now appended
  • if the issue is a BSOD, please post all the dump files in \Windows\Minidump folder (you can compress them) N/A
  • if the issue is a crash, program stops responding or freezes please see this topic: N/A
  • if the issue is an error (not program crash or freeze) please run the dbgInfo.bat in installation folder and post the resulting cbu file.Now appended
  • Any other Additional Information (for example, any non-default settings used); Backup includes file and folder filters, and email settings (which don’t work - see below), log is on ‘create’ not append. [Edit] Hve now appended relevant Debug file. My guess is that this may be related to the use of aborted backups as the basis for incremental backups, or checking for baseline backups and finding aborted backups. The aborted backup file may still be locked?

I have replicated this in a Win 7 Vmware VM under slightly different circumstances - re-trying a failed Backup using the re-try button a) with no other memory resident programs running apart from OS b) default CBU settings apart from one filter.

Problem: Text exclusion filters:

  1. do not distinguish between folders with the same name but different paths.
  2. do not allow you to distinguish between files without extensions and folders
    These problems could lead to difficulty in understanding what is to be backed up, and therefore apparent unreliability in backups.

[Edit] Could be regarded as a wish list issue - please say if you wish me to move it there.

Your Operating System (and whether it’s 32bit/64bit); Win 7 x64

  • Other Backup & Security Software Installed; CIS, Keepass
  • How you produced the problem; Experimented with filters
  • How you tried to resolve the problem; Used environment variables (did not work)
  • Screen-shots with the error (if any); N/A
  • if the issue is a BSOD, please post all the dump files in \Windows\Minidump folder (you can compress them) N/A
  • if the issue is a crash, program stops responding or freezes please see this topic. N/A
  • if the issue is an error (not program crash or freeze) please run the dbgInfo.bat in installation folder and post the resulting cbu file. N/A appears to be a ‘design feature’
  • Any other Additional Information (for example, any non-default settings used); Backup includes file and folder filters, and email settings (which don’t work - see below), log is on ‘create’ not append.

Problem: Cannot navigate back to backup in progress screen after pausing online backup an navigating away. Backup was still in progress as an abort dialogue was invoked when I tried to close CBU. [Edited]

Your Operating System (and whether it’s 32bit/64bit); Win 7 x64

  • Other Backup & Security Software Installed; CIS, Keepass
  • How you produced the problem; Watching backup in progress screen with log on it, paused backup., navigated to edit the current backup profile, cancelled out of that, tried to get back to backup in progress screen, could not find a way
  • How you tried to resolve the problem; tried all main menu options, and any subsidary ones that seemed relevant
  • Any other Additional Information (for example, any non-default settings used); Backup includes file and folder filters, and email settings (which don’t work - see below), log is on ‘create’ not append, so logs may not be relevant.

The problem: Email settings appear to get corrupted on saving and so don’t work.

Your Operating System (and whether it’s 32bit/64bit); Win 7 x64

  • Other Backup & Security Software Installed; CIS, Keepass
  • How you produced the problem; Entered email settings, saved profile, reurned to profile to edit it, emails settings were missing characters
  • How you tried to resolve the problem; tried multiple times
  • Screen-shots with the error (if any); appended
  • if the issue is a BSOD, please post all the dump files in \Windows\Minidump folder (you can compress them) N/A
  • if the issue is a crash, program stops responding or freezes please see this topic. N/A
  • if the issue is an error (not program crash or freeze) please run the dbgInfo.bat in installation folder and post the resulting cbu file. Appended
  • Any other Additional Information (for example, any non-default settings used); Backup includes file and folder filters, and email settings (which don’t work - see below), log is on ‘create’ not append. [edit] Log should now be relevant. Problem may be due to unusual mail server name or user name required by my ISP. But they work in Outloook.

[attachment deleted by admin]

Problem: When set on ‘create’ logging facility over-writes last log file with another one with the same name. I expected a new one to be ‘created’ each time a backup is run, with name qualified by date and time. If over-write is the policy, it should say over-write not create, I think.

Problem: Online backup job failed after some time (2hrs), apparently due to connection problems. Strangely, there were no connection re-tries. Details in log file. Right clicking on resultant cloud backup file in CCloud explorer interface caused explorer windows to hang; rebooting caused Windows to hang on shutdown with screen showing ‘logging off’. Removal of power needed to force reboot. [Update: this problem just happened a second time after re-starting backup - this time it ran overnight (UK time), and managed 3% of the backup job before failing].

Your Operating System (and whether it’s 32bit/64bit); Win7 x64

  • Other Backup & Security Software Installed; CIS, Keepass
  • How you produced the problem; Performed online backup using a profile
  • How you tried to resolve the problem; Please see above.
  • Screen-shots with the error (if any); Screen was showing log when backup failed - appended for second failure.
  • if the issue is a BSOD, please post all the dump files in \Windows\Minidump folder (you can compress them) N/A
  • if the issue is a crash, program stops responding or freezes please see this topic: N/A
  • if the issue is an error (not program crash or freeze) please run the dbgInfo.bat in installation folder and post the resulting cbu file. Appended 2 copies, one for each occurrence.
  • Any other Additional Information (for example, any non-default settings used); Backup includes file and folder filters, log is now on APPEND, b/u was encrypted and on max compression. LAN & WAN & WLAN link stable since last reboot of router & no related records in firewall or D+ logs - so it’s not likely to be a local connectivity problem, also NB Idrive online backup is operating normally over same period from a different machine on same LAN. Will now try B/U over wired link just in case - result was still connection failire, this time after an hour or so - error code this time was 91221.

Testing in a VM lead to a similar, but not the same result.Connection errors occurred at about 1% and CBU stopped backing up, however more re-tries were attempted (7-8). Finally it appears CBU crashed overnight as the GUI dialog was not there in the morning, but puzzlingly there was not crash dialog. Will try to repeat this in case I am in error. (Vmware VM a) with no other memory resident programs running apart from OS b) default CBU settings apart from one exclusion filter). Repeat: a repeat of the VMware trial lead to immediate backup failure with code 100 (Timeout), but an opportunity to re-try.

Hi Mike,

Thank you for taking the time to describe each issue in such detail.

Error 100 is not related to VSS. I can’t find any backup running in debug logs at 19:30:37. Could it be that other program may have used VSS at that time?

We will add macros to log naming in next version. For example log will be named like this: C:\my_backup_log|DATE1||TIME|.log So you will be able to use date and time qualifiers.

The next version will provide ability to set exclusion/inclusion filters on full paths (not just files/folders names).

Here are the issues that we were able to reproduce and will be fixed in next release:

Sometimes the backup file might remain locked, if COSService unexpectedly crashes.

This is a user interface bug. It should not allow editing a profile while backup is running.

Thanks

Thankyou for responding

OK just a speculation. No backups running at that time but I think some windows utilities may use it. Unfortunately windows events don't log the requester AFAIK.

No crash evident at the time, but maybe it just froze.

Fair enough
Thanks
No problem.

Just recently noted another issue which should be easy to replicate. If you do online backup in zip format, CBU thinks you need to change disks after 100Mb and flashes up a dialog. Will do a full bug report if you wish.

Problem. Online backup fails with Error 91221 (internal error) after reconnection attempt saying too much data was lost for recovery. Offer opportunity to manually re-try. This fails. This error is occurring on almost every attempt to backup at the present.

  • Any other Additional Information (for example, any non-default settings used); Backup includes file and folder filters, log is now on APPEND, b/u was encrypted and on max compression.

Problem: On retry of backup (using retry button) after immediately preceding bug, CB throws up a dialog asking me to insert the next disk so it can continue to save a zip file. But it is supposed to be backing up to a .cbu file (I have double checked settings and desination file, which has been created as .cbu). Some days ago I tried backing up to a zip file, and it may have crashed at that time, so maybe it has inadvertently partially cached that setting at some point in its program? Later, after throwing up the error, the backup fails with a 91221 error again.

Hi

Here are my comments:

Error 1221 will be fixed in next release.

The error is caused by windows explorer. It detects that a zip file is incomplete and it asks for next part of the zip file. To fix the issue you can delete the zip file and re-upload it.

I think CB says that “COSService is not started…” . Cloud client is different. CB can perform backups without Cloud client. Can you please create a dump file if the crash happens again?

Thanks

That’s good.

The error is caused by windows explorer. It detects that a zip file is incomplete and it asks for next part of the zip file. To fix the issue you can delete the zip file and re-upload it.
Is there some way in which this can be handled. I think people will find this very confusing?
I think CB says that "COSService is not started..." . Cloud client is different. CB can perform backups without Cloud client. Can you please create a [url=https://forums.comodo.com/news-announcements-feedback-cb/how-to-create-dump-files-t79378.0.html]dump file[/url] if the crash happens again?
Actually no it did not, probably because COSservice was running (well to be clear it is running now and I have not rebooted since). Puzzling this. In the presence of CCloud does it try to use it instead of COSservice? Or maybe a frozen CCloud was locking a resource that COSservice wanted? Or I suppose it could have just been co-incidence. Cloud problem or exit happened then backup problem happened, one did not directly clause the other. Maybe comms problems caused both. Happened 2-3 times.
Can you please create a [url=https://forums.comodo.com/news-announcements-feedback-cb/how-to-create-dump-files-t79378.0.html]dump file[/url] if the crash happens again?
Yes sure. The bug report was supposed to be about how CB handled the situation, so unfortunately I was not very careful in describing the CCloud error. I should have said 'freeze'.

Hope this helps

Best wishes

Unfortunately no, windows explorer decides when to show the “insert next disk” dialog.

If it happens again please post a screenshot. Then I can get a better idea on what happened.

A dump file would is helpful for ‘freezes’ too.
