Of course it can ! If you look at the "charakteristiks" and "definition" of an M-I-T-M attack , this method of attack also allows for identity theft .

"A man-in-the-middle attack (MITM attack), also referred to as middleman attack or Janus attack (after the double-faced Janus of Roman mythology), is an attacking form that finds its application in computer networks. The attacker stands either physically or - most of the time - logically between the two communication partners, with his system has complete control over the traffic between two or more network participants and can view the information as desired and even manipulate. The attacker's Janus-headedness is that he pretends to be the counterpart to the communication partners."
