Another "CAVL Redirfs Problem With Kernel 2.6.38 And Up" Thread

Just installed CAVL on 14.04 (I know it’s not supported), and I got the familiar error message

Filesystem filter driver is not loaded

I ran the diagnostics, and got a more descriptive error saying

The kernel module redirfs.ko appropriate for your current kernel version does not exist

I have no idea what this means so I decided to search the forums, and others have posted about this too. One solution appears to be to download some random-unofficial-patched version of Redirfs. I’ll save testing that for another time, on a discardable virtual machine. Another option could be to downgrade my kernel (another not so great idea). So now I’m wondering what Redirfs is, and why I need it? So I did some Googling.

What is Redirfs?

layer between virtual file system switch (VFS) and file system drivers

What does Redirfs do?

RedirFS is intended to be used by so-called filters

What is a filter?

Filter is a linux kernel module (LKM) that uses the RedirFS framework. Each filter can add some useful functionality to the existing file systems

Why is Redirfs Not working?

REDIRFS IS NOT WORKING WITH 2.6.38 AND NEWER KERNELS

Why isn’t the Redirfs project fixing this?

RedirFS is no longer developed nor maintained. If you are looking for similar functionality you can try to check out the PluginFS project.

Why is CAVL using Redirfs instead of PluginFS?

PluginFS is under development and by far not ready for a production usage

Some more Googling suggested that AVG’s, and F-Prot’s products might also have used (still use?) Redirfs.

What does CAVL use Redirfs to do?

provides the ability to have real-time protection

This leaves me with one question. Is CAVL going to be continued?
