Doesn't it work only with Seagate and Maxtor hard disks?

I'm pretty sure it works with any brand. Try it.

You're welcome. Smiley
Can't you get a Windows XP "downgrade" CD from the vendor? Huh

John

Does it cost anything? Grin  Well I do have an old XP CD, but it doesn't have SP1....and the slipstreaming thing didn't work. Undecided

I think it is unfortunate that this topic, which was meant to provide simple solutions for minor infections, has now become far too complicated.

The new users who this was designed to help are now going to be hopelessly confused.

Time to start again?

James,

I didn't mean and don't want to hurt your feelings, but as I've already said, I don't think your original post was a "simple solution" for "novice and helpless" users, and my own recommended tools are different. I sincerely hope you benefited from the responses.

We are all entitled to our own personal opinions, of course, and if you want to post your own personal advice without any commentary, then I suggest you call it "James' advice", and see if a Moderator will close it for you. Others could do the same.

I personally think a wiki might be a good way to go, with sections for different levels of users and different issues, and participants here earning the right to edit it.

Just my $0.02. Tongue

Windows XP "downgrade" CD should be free or cheap, but that depends on your vendor, and the only way to know for sure is to ask.

I'd be happy to help you slipstream your existing CD. Start by (a) copying it to a hard disk folder and (b) downloading the network install version of SP1a or SP2. (I don't see any mention of compatibility with SP3, so I wouldn't use it.)

Yeah but :

- Deletion isn't the best  Roll Eyes
- this way, we can't have a clash for real-time scanning
- people don't need to deinstall their own av for that

Hi Xan,

You could explain how to install Avira without the guard, custom install no problem. Wink

False positives are just as important to me as false negatives, and I get too many false positives with Avira, more than with AVG, avast, or CIS.

Yes but Superantispyware is top dog for that and you already recommend that.
