Why is a GUI interfaced needed for traffic? If your wanting to monitor network traffic, try network magic. The more they add the more resources it's going to take to run it.

I agree. I might sound like a broken record, but I like how ZoneAlarm does it. When traffic is running, the system icon changes to red and green bars. Then it changes back when traffic stops.
How about instead of red and green bars, you can have small bright red and green arrows fitted into a box-like icon?
