comodo version 3.12.111745.560

Windows Vista Home Basic  32bit  SP1/SP2

Greetings:

Had an issue a couple weeks back where the Vista welcome screen would hang after login until control alt delete was pressed, then it would continue to the desktop.  After uninstalling Comodo and rebooting, the problem would go away.   I reinstalled and the welcome screen would hang again.  I had played with disabling various protections to no avail.  I didn't mind hitting the key combo though until I found a solution or an update were issued.  During that time I initially had SP1 with the same behavior and have recently updated to SP2, which also exhibits the same.

Last night I was playing with the task bar properties and came across a work around for my Dell Lat by enabling .. "Keep the task bar on top of other windows" option  in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties.  This morning, to my surprise, my laptop booted to the desktop.

Do you see the event being logged in the Defense +logs? If so please post a screenshot. The logs can be found under Defense + --> Common Tasks --> View Defense + Alerts.

Also take a look at the Windows logs to see if gets logged there. Go Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Event viewer --> Windows logs --> System.

Same problem here, but I'm on Windows Seven Ultimate x64 (build 7600).

Comodo's Defence Log is clear ("There is no items to show").

The Windows's LOG has nothing to be worry, but there is:

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/7248/comodoctrlaltdel02.png

But I didn't found where is the "Keep the task bar on top of other windows" option  Sad
Maybe that option just jumped out from seven (In vista I can find it)...  Undecided

Thanks for support,

Can you tell me if in the Windows system logs  there was an entry telling Windows was waiting for a program or service to respond but it did not respond within a certain time period?

No, the log is clear, no warnings about waiting for program.

The wait for a ctrl+alt+del remembers the old login style, where before login you have to push these buttons to prevent false login screens.

I'm re-formating my lap (where the problem happened) with another build version (beta too).
My desk didn't show that problem at this build.

Thanks for the attention,

For a while now I have been reading other posts about Vista Hanging at the Welcome Screen after a fresh installation of COMODO CIS. So Far the posts and replys from CIS techs are very vague and do not address the real problem! Many users just so happen to mention that they have a DELL pc that this problem has appeared on! I believe this is going unnoticed by CIS SUPPORT! There is a pattern here and it is being overlooked! This problem is not! Zone Alarm or otherwise! I run a Computer Tech Shop. I have done so since 1992. I have just a tad of experence in the Trial & Error Dept. What I have experienced since I have started using Comodo CIS and Recommending it to my customers is this:
I can load CIS with no issues on almost every XP & Vista machine I work on. Except!!!! the following! Cis support take note!

Every dell inspiron 1501 laptop with either version of windows vista! gives this very problem! so guys if you have any interest in solving this conflict with your software
Get you 3 or 4 inspiron 1501's with vista hb or premium (occurs with both VISTA's, just not XP)
And you will be able to reproduce this problem every time! now i dont know what the hang up is with cis, these machines, & their configurations but it happens every time!

>>>BACKGROUND<<<
every dell insprion 1501 w/ VISTA OS that has come thru my door this year(since being introduced to COMODO) We have done a factory recovery! (Hitting F8 to use the built in factory image recovery method).
Then we UNINSTALL the Trial Versions of whatever virus protection they come with,,, usually Norton's! In which case we have also tried to further ensure that no trace of Norton's exists by running the Nortons Removal Tool, which seems to process and apparently remove some left behind registry entrys and whatnot! Install all Windows Service Packs and Critical Updates. Then Just like clockwork After an Installation of CIS and a reboot, it happens. it occurs every time. I am currently setting here using the 25'th or so dell inspiron 1501 i have experienced this exact scenario on! you've got to fix this. I want to recommend cis to these people and do over the phone before they bring me their pc's. But every time one of these show up i just shake my head and hang it low because i know what i am in for! So finally i decided after once again checking with your forums and realizing this problem is still going mostly under the radar. It is a real problem and can be reproduced with little effort on your part. please redouble your efforts to look into and reproduce this problem with the detailed information i have now provided. This should be do'able.   r & d simple trial & error guys  come-on!

In closing...   sure i could wipe out there factory recoverys and clean load vista. and this my infact avert the problem but the customer doesn't want that. I dont want that! it trashes all their drivers and apps they get with their pc. Costs me alot more time loading and downloading their drivers and soforth. Some of the prloaded stuff is crap sure! But most of these people are on a tight budget and need the few good apps they would loose going the other way. and there were only like several hundered thousand dell inspiron laptops sold with this configuration. we need this to work!

I am pushing for comodo, would even be willing to put up posters in my store front windows! send them to me, i will,,,,if you fix this!

WE ARE!
The computer guys of Bowling Green, KY

You will be assemilated! resistance if futile!

EricJH :   Sorry I'm so late in my return.  There is nothing in the Defense logs nor the window system event logs that is of any interest.  It seems to be a random occurrence anymore on my Dell Latitude 131.  Sometimes it boots to the desktop, most times it hangs whether or not log in information is needed(I've used log in and it hangs after the info is inputted or even on auto it will hang on the welcome screen).  Both are random .. sometimes it boots into the desktop but most times it doesn't.

I'm looking for some way to see what the system is hanging on .. I tried booting without the GUI in hopes it would spill its guts, but no.  I thought by disabling it in the startup it would boot to desktop.  That theory, which proved valid for a while, failed as well, after a couple reboots.  I'm about ready to revert back to step one again and uninstall to see if it is a CIS problem or if it is a figment of my imagination.   Huh    This constant still stands, control-alt-del will boot Vista into the desktop when it hangs, with both non-login and login choices.

I do see there are some options in Defense to disable and play with, I'll check those options out and also recheck the logs for anything pertinent.

Thanks for your help!

Hello all:

The issue seems to have gone away for me with the unchecking of Detect shellcode injections(i.e.
Buffer overflow protection) in Image Execution Control Level under Advanced in Defense+ Tasks.

I rebooted 3 times.  Two soft and one hard and all take me into the desktop without CIS hanging.  You may want to try that, but as I will say below, I don't know the consequences of leaving it unchecked.

Unfortunately, I do not know what risks I am taking by leaving that box unchecked.   There is an exclusions list and it would seem IF this is the problem, then whatever program is hanging could be listed so as to use the Buffer overflow protection option.  I do not have enough knowledge of Vista to know what it is hanging though.  I'm assuming that should be in the logs BUT my logs are not pointing to any files or issues; Windows or Defense.

Any ideas are more than welcome!

Thanks

Steve

Thanks for the responces. Thats good to know and I will have to try that on the next unit I get in the Shop that has this problem.

 However,

It is Dishartning that not one COMODO Tech has stepped forward and responded lately to either of these two or three related threads. These post are recent but have been up for a week or two. And nothing!

I got a call today from a customer that has complained of strange Browser problems 1 day after getting his pc factory restored and CIS installed. Pages like yahoo wont load completely or at all. Google works fine. Other webpage links cannot be clicked on. Quickly I walked him thru disabling Defense + and >Bam< problem went away. So if Comodo techs are unwilling to respond to us thru their own forums,,, to at least acknowledge they hear us and are working on the problem, then Im not sure I am willing to put COMODO on another computer or recommend it to my Customer BASE.  AVG 9 is out now, and with the many issues I've experienced running CIS, I might as well go back to being an AVG guinea pig instead. At least they respond to us in their forums. And I'v never had problems like this with their program. Granted its free version doesn't have a firewall. So back to relying on Windows Firewall or getting ZoneAlarm I suppose.

>>> Does CIS even read these? I'm personally beginning to wonder! <<<

I would at least like to know wether or not the CIS Tech Dept.  have read my first post?
and if so, are they taking that information and looking into  what could be causing this.
I gave them a rock solid lead to finding the conflict. In any trial and error situation, being able
to Reproduce the problem reliably is a major step forward in finding the bug! So whats up Guys?

I have the same problem, hang in Welcome screen on Inspiron 1501.  It goes away when "Detect Shell Code Injection" i unchecked.  It certainly appears that Defense+ is unhappy with something in Dell's packaging of Vista.  Creasy was kind enough to lead me through deleting most of the software on my laptop, but with no effect on the problem.

His conclusion was that it was a Comodo bug and should be reported.  From watching this thread I have to wonder "Why bother?".  I am certainly grateful for free software that mostly works.  And I can understand why Comodo wouldn't necessarily want to invest much effort so that Dell 1501 users can use free stuff.

But why the pretense that this is a place to report bugs?

I could understand a response of "Sorry, it isn't worth fixing".  But to me no response seems to indicate no one is looking.
