On 28 May 2014, the TrueCrypt official website began redirecting back to the SourceForge domain, displaying a page featuring a warning which claimed the software may contain unfixed security issues, and that development of TrueCrypt was ended “in 5/2014 after Microsoft terminated support of Windows XP”. The message noted that later versions of Windows have build in support for disk encryption using Bitlocker, and that Linux and Mac had similar built-in solutions, which the message claims renders TrueCrypt unnecessary (note that only the expensive high-end versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7 come with bitlocker, making the claim of TrueCrypt being unneeded dubious[14]). The page recommends any data encrypted by TrueCrypt be migrated to other encryption setups, offering instructions on moving to BitLocker. The page also announced a new software version, 7.2, which only allows decryption. As of May 28, 2014, the authenticity of the announcement and new software has not been confirmed,[15][16] and is widely considered suspect.[14] It has been noted that the new version 7.2 released with the announcement is signed with TrueCrypt’s private PGP key.[14] One leading theory is that the TrueCrypt team was ordered by a US security service to compromise their own program, and instead chose to terminate it, as happened to secure email provider Lavabit, with it being illegal for the TrueCrypt team to say directly what happened.[14] "
