Awhile ago I've created a network policy called AV update (based on Web browser, changed DNS to both TCP as well as UDP for AVG :-) + log all). I'm configuring all AVs to use this policy.
UnThreat does not log any internet access (not due to automatic upadtes nor due to manual check via about).
BTW: I'm failing to get sched whole computer scans to work (nothing block by D+).
For now I'm keeping it installed as a 2'nd opinion scanner (active protection disabled).

I sent an email to Unthreat team regarding AV updates, database & engine in the free & paid version.
Here is the reply I got.
"There is automatic update in the paid version but not in the free one. We are about to release a new version of the Free version with a button for offline update. The databases are the same but you will have to do manual updates on the free version."

There's a button (I guess this is manual) for "Check For Update Now ..." under update (after clicking about) - pushing it does not create any out connection. I guess the sched scan does nothing due to usage of free version ... [at]naren : if you can get them to enable manual excludes (even for "known threats") for active protection it will be great !

Unthreat Forum Released http://www.unthreat.com/forums/By the way I also asked them now what is the difference between the autoupdate in free & paid version? They replied "The update in the free version is a bit slower than our paid version, however our incremental updates are no more than 100-200kb so they are still downloaded quickly. Other than that, there are no differences." I also asked them Unthreat uses Vipre engine but I find difference in detection of Unthreat & Vipre, why? They replied "There might be slight differences between us and Vipre because they recently released their new version with a new engine. We will soon have it in-house and upgrade it." I must say awesome support. Thanx Naren

UnThreat and most licensed engine will have different detection from the developer's product. Because it only used engine (or signature) not the heuristics or technology.

New version of Unthreat Free Edition released with autoupdate feature now. Previously it was manual update.
The current available "Free Version" dated 5/12/11 is a joke - and a big one ! It's both AV + FW not just AV (although it is stated as AV free). Although displayed free version there's a count down of 30 days expiration. Updates attempts (manual and automatic when pressing About) are failing (an http request is issued to IP 206.214.219.97). The sudden changes is vendor policy about free version behavior as well as downloaded exe (installer) functionality are not doing any good to product / vendor reputation !

There was a bug which was converting free edition into trial. I posted this at wilders & informed Unthreat support too. The bug was fixed. I too download a new download package of free edition dated Dec 5 & installed & it worked fine. Free was not converted to trial & auto & manual updates both are fine here. Thanx Naren

10'x ! 4.1.11215 (at my end it's dated to 7/12) seems better, however it seems that "free" versions are out without any QA what so ever ... About updates, well no indications for update checking failures - however on the other hand I'm failing to notice any successful update. I'm missing a sort of change log (as well as an unconditional exclude list from active protection) and I do hope there's a serious intention of keeping a real free version (and not putting it out as a field lab or sort of public QA).

Post the bugs/probs, new option you would like to see in their forum so that they are fixed & implemented soon. http://www.unthreat.com/forums/Thanx Naren

As an active (not as I used to be) open source dev I can testify 1'st hand : The only justification for such a rapid pace is due to emergency fixes and / or using your app users as your QA (both options are not that promising to your audience ...) I'm giving UnThreat suggestions subforum a ride (I hope to enjoy the outcomes via being able to experience with a better product)
