Question: Do you want that Comodo Time Machine continue to be developed?
Yes, please, save and keep the technology on.
No. It's not necessary, I'll use whatever Microsoft make for Windows 8.
Never mind, I use other product (concurrence).

Microsoft could be developing an enhanced system restore on Windows 8.
The evidences leaked but they go for a file backup (shadow copy) and not for low level snapshots technology of CTM.
Melih is waiting for Microsoft's answer to continue developing CTM (see here and here).
Comodo already owns the code but stop developing  Cry

We, users (for instance: Ronny and OmeletGuy Moderators; Valentin N and I and a lot of others), want it to be saved! And keep the snapshot technology to be developed.

What do you think? Are you with us?  Wink

comodo time machine just started getting developed again. a new team from comodo has taken over the project and is aiming for march for the first release.

Read through this board to see the wishlist. Razvan the head developer gives us some news about the next release occasionally.

Due to the number of posts in this thread, I haven't read them all to ensure the following point hasn't already been mentioned.

This product could be incorporated with Comodo Firewall or Comodo Internet Security to provide a safe backup before allowing an unknown installer to run.  See the help page describing where users can opt to perform a System Restore before running an unknown installer:

http://help.comodo.com/topic-72-1-284-2959-Understanding-Alerts.html#Defense_alert

Scroll down to see the alerts that have the Sandbox button (so the user could opt to run the installer in the sandbox).  Notice one of the safety (recovery) options in those dialogs is:

Create a "Windows" system restore point.

Well, presumably anyone here participating in this thread already knows the limitations of a system restore point.  If, for example, [a newer variant and yet undetected version of] the GPcode ransomware hits your host then your data files get encrypted and become unusable junk occupying disk space.  A system restore won't do anything to recover your data files.  That's not the intent of System Restore.  Even if you regularly backup your partitions, those may occur at long enough intervals that you would still lose some config or data files.  There isn't an option in CIS or CF to add a command line to run an image backup program instead of using System Restore.  So this would be a point where having another option in these dialogs to create a CTM snapshot would provide a decent means of recovery.  Instead of doing the very limited backup of a system restore point, you could create a snapshot and have a much better chance of restoring your host after running the unknown installer.

Also, waiting to see what Windows 8 might provide for recovery mechanisms does nothing to help all those Windows XP, Vista, and 7 users that are not migrating to Windows 8.  Not everyone wastes more money and steps into another learning curve to get marginal improvement in the OS.  Newer doesn't mean better, desirable, or even wanted and not everyone wants to fix what's already working for them.

Incorporating or pairing CTM with Comodo's other security products provides for more robust solutions for security and recovery.  After all, the point of security isn't just about preventing invasion but also in recovering from that invasion.

There is already a part there, if CTM is installed these alerts don't show "Create Windows System Restore point" as option but "Create Comodo TimeMachine snapshot"

DOH!  Looks like Comodo already saw the advantage of incorporating CTM with CIS.  Thanks for the update.  Odd that, if true, why development would cease if CTM is incorporated into another of their products that is still being developed.  Doesn't seem plausible to have a supported product tangled to an unsupported product.

Well it needs CTM to be installed separately but once CIS detects CTM is installed it replaces System Restore options with CTM snapshots.

i tested it on a VM and the option is on defense + alerts but it does not actually create a snapshot. i have tried click allow and block on different alerts and it doesnt create the snapshot.

idk if its a problem with ctm or cis im going to add it to the ctm wishlist
