Kruis, we all know that the number of definitions is not a comparable item between the av. What do you want to see?
Generic signatures, heuristics, etc. could reduce *significantly* the number of signatures (and also increase performance and protection).
Here, more is not necessarily better.

But neither one nor the other are related to the "number" of signatures. A signature could also goes to a FP.

Of course, regardless they are a non profit organization, they need money to live...

What would they be lying about? They state

[AV-Comparatives is an Austrian Non-Profit-Organization, which is providing independent Anti-Virus software tests free to the public.

The give the results for free to the public. They don't state anything about if they charge the vendors being on test or not.
