It seems that it really ran out of memory.
How big is the total size of the files and folders you are trying to backup?
If possible, please reproduce the error again and take a look at CBU.exe memory consumption in task manager before the backup fails.

Thanks

I do not have access to the pc right now, but irc then the total size of files to backup was +- 180Gb.

Something I forgot to mention: during the backup, I copied +- 10 files (15Mb each) to the directory that was being backed up into a newly created subdirectory.

Tried it again, same result: Backup failed with code 3 (Not enough memory).

This time it stopped at 83%.

Size & number of files it should backup:
137Gb
20948 files
484 folders

The backup was started before I went to sleep, so I could not monitor the memory consumption of CBU.exe.  Here is what I have:
at 9% of the backup: floating around 20.000K
while still open after crash: 18.596K

Some more info I forgot to mention previously:
- pagefile is turned off
- password protection of the backup is turned on with AES

I'm experiencing something similar to what tomvdp is describing, only my backup starts to error out after "Reading parent backup tree..." Here is an excerpt from the backup process:
Quote
29.11.2011 08:33:18 Preprocessing file tree: 87 percent
29.11.2011 08:33:18 Preprocessing file tree: 100 percent
29.11.2011 08:33:18 Writing initial items information...
29.11.2011 08:33:18 Reading parent backup tree...
29.11.2011 08:33:18 An error occurred while reading backup information.
29.11.2011 08:33:18 Error Occurred
29.11.2011 08:33:18 Backup failed with code 3 (Not enough memory).
Not enough memory available.

The backup size is 6.1 GB and the target drive is accessible (readable/writable). I have 4 GB of memory and my system only shows about 50% of it in use. While CBU.exe is running (before it runs out of memory), the maximum that I see it taking up is about 52 MB.

- Your Operating System: Windows 7 SP1 64-bit
- Other Backup & Security Software Installed: Microsoft Security Essentials
- How you produced the problem: Tried to run an incremental backup that I have been running daily for a couple of weeks now.
- How you tried to resolve the problem: Rebooted and retried the backup, unsuccessfully.
- Screen-shots with the error (if any): Can provide them if needed, but I doubt they are needed.
- Post Memory Dumps on crash if you encounter any: Application does NOT crash.
- File system: NTFS
- All log files: Attached
- does Diagnose says the application is installed correctly? No Diagnose Option
- User Account Control On/Off ? On
- Any other Additional Information: None

Hey Emanuel,

To fix the issue you need to change the order of the "UpperFilters" key value in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry key.

When installing CTM, then CB the order is:
bdisk
CTMSHD
PartMgr

But it should be changed to this, before restarting computer:
CTMSHD
bdisk
PartMgr

Thanks

While thsi method worked and allowed me to install and use CBU4.0.7, when I try an Outlook 2007 backup, the resulting CBU file is 2KB in size, whereas the same backup type, when run with CBU 3.X was over 239MB.

I do nort have any log files in %temp%\comodologfiles. That folder does not exist on my system.

Ewen :-)

Hi Ewen,

Was Outlook opened in both cases when backup was performed?

Thanks

I'm almost positive Outlook was closed at the time, but I will rerun the jobs tonight and confirm.

Hi Emanuel,

I just ran an email backup manually after making certain Outlook was shut down. The backup ran but it produced the same result. I manually created a second custom job with the same parameters and exported it to a script. Running this second job (and then running it a second time from the script produced identical results - a 2KB backup.

Script and job output log attached.

Cheers,
Ewen :-)

- Your Operating System (and whether it's 32bit/64bit); win7 pro 64
- Other Backup & Security Software Installed; cfw 5.8, cpm, comodo system utilities.
- How you produced the problem; setup a custom incremental backup. it did a backup of my music from my computer to an external hard drive. once it starting copying the band "Ill Niño" it changed the name to "Ill Niño" on the source and destination drive
- How you tried to resolve the problem; changed the letter CB didnt recognize
- Screen-shots with the error (if any); na
- Post Memory Dumps on crash if you encounter any; na
- file system (FAT32/NTFS/...) ntfs
- All log files (%TEMP%\ComodoLogsFolder and \Windows\Temp\ComodoLogsFolder). You can compress these folders into a single zip file.
- does Diagnose says the application is installed correctly? yes
- User Account Control On/Off ? off
- Any other Additional Information; do you still need the log files even tho its just a text problem?
