Windows 7 Crash on Boot up
«

Hello all,
I'm brand new here but I've been a happy CIS Firewall user under XP for several weeks. Today I decided to remove my trial McAfee on my new Windows 7 laptop and install CIS Firewall only. My Windows 7 version is Home Premium, 64-bit.
I uninstalled McAfee, then installed CIS version 3.13.121240.574_XP_Vista_x64. The install went fine, but on restart Windows crashed. I tried restarting normally a few times but it crashed every time.
Fortunately I set a restore point before installing CIS so I'm back again running McAfee, but it's not running correctly. I can open the McAfee Security Center, but no options are shown. Some of my startup programs include Avast and Ad-Aware.
Anyone have any suggestions for getting CIS Firewall to run on my laptop? At this point I don't have any working firewall. Thanks.

Here's a bit more info. I made sure Avast and Windows Firewall was off, and then I reinstalled the firewall portion of CIS. I have the same results with the laptop crashing on startup. I also discovered that if I boot in safe mode with networking, the laptop also crashes on startup. I was able to run CIS in basic Safe Mode.
The laptop is connected to a wired Ethernet LAN.
Thanks for any suggestions.

I'm still hoping for suggestions on this one. From reading posts here I noticed that there is or was an incompatibibility with CIS and Cyberlink PowerDVD. I have PowerDVD v8 on my laptop. Might this be the cause?
I've emailed Comodo tech support buy they haven't responded yet. Since my original post I gave up on CIS and McAfee and removed both. I'm running Windows firewall now, but would like to run CIS, if someone can tell me how to make it work under Windows 7 without crashing.
Thanks again.

Does crashing also include a BSOD blue screen, and if so does it record a minidump in c:\windows\minidump\ folder? If you please upload the crash file....

Thanks Ronny. The crash showed the BSOD but there are no files in the minidump folder.

A full dump then in c:\windows\memory.dmp ?
Do you use disk encryption software? normally it should write minidumps...

Can you check, Computer, right mouse, Properties, System Protection, switch to Advanced Tab and Startup & Recovery settings and see what it states for "System failure" ?

Ronny, here are the settings:
These are checked: Write an event to the system log, automatically restart, overwrite and existing file
Dump File: %SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP

Can you set it to Minidump?
And also check the windows eventlog to see if it recorded some crash information there?

I didn't see anything of interest in the event logs but I'm not really sure I know what I should be looking for.
I can try again to reinstall CIS, but unless I change something, I can't imagine the results will be any different. If I install it again, is there something else I can try to resolve the issue or at least help with debugging after Windows 7 crashes?

Yes if we could get a minidump that would be very helpful for the developers to pinpoint the problem...
But if you run Disk Encryption, and/or have pagefile on drive C disabled there will be no dump files...
Crash messages should be in the System logfile (if any).

Thanks Creasy. I'm going to sit this one out until Microsoft and Comodo figure this one out. Meanwhile I'll continue running Windows 7 firewall. I hope to come back to Comodo in the near future.

Since you mention Avast and Mc Affee being installed in the past try the following angle.
We are gonna take a look to see if there are some old drivers of your previously uninstalled security programs are still around. Go to Device Manager --> View --> show hidden devices --> now look under Non Plug and Play drivers --> when you see a driver that belongs to your previous security programs click right --> uninstall ---> reboot your computer.
When the problem persists make sure there are no auto starts from your previous security programs. Download
Autoruns
and run it.
This program finds about all auto starts in Windows. This tool can therefore seriously damage Windows when not handled properly. After starting go to Options and choose to hide Windows and Microsoft entries, to include empty locations and then push F5 to refresh.
Now check all entries to see if there are references to your previous security program. When you find them untick them. After unticking reboot your computer and see what happens.
