cmdagent heavy CPU usage solution
«
on:
January 13, 2008, 12:54:50 PM »
Having had a problem with cmdagent.exe hogging LARGE chunks of my CPU usage almost ALL of the time.... making using my PC for
anything
a real slow experience!..... and having searched in vain for a solution that worked, I think I have found the solution to solve the problem.
cmdagent.exe becomes CPU hungry when Application Behaviour Analysis is set to ON within Comodo Firewall. Be aware though that turning Application Behaviour Analysis off will reduce Comodo's "Protection Strength" from Excellent to Good (3 bars instead of 4 on the Summary screen).... this sacrifice will have to be a personal choice, but I have had it switched off for nearly a week now and have had no problems whatsoever. Reading the info help file on Application Behaviour Analysis it would appear it is not an
'essential'
part of the firewall but more an
'extra'
piece of security that other firewalls do not have.
When Application Behaviour Analysis is turned off it has an immediate effect on the CPU usage of cmdagent.exe. When I first tried it I had forgotten how fast my internet really is!... and the speed of starting up new software too.... I know those of you who are pulling out your hair at how slow cmdagent is making your PC will feel the same too.
To turn off this feature (I am using Comodo Firewall Version.2.4.18.184), Open Comodo Firewall, select the Security tab, select Advanced, select Configure... in the Application Behaviour Analysis, (click on Help to read the info if you want to know more about what you are disabling), uncheck Enable Application Behaviour Analysis, click OK........ no more slow PC!!
Hope this of use.
Cheers,
Mike
Edit: I've just played around a little more since writing this and discovered that you only need to uncheck 'Monitor DLL Injections' from the 6 individual elements within Application Behaviour Analysis screen. Not only does this solve the CPU usage, it also leaves the Protection Strength as Excellent instead of Good.
So... the solution is:
To turn off this feature (I am using Comodo Firewall Version.2.4.18.184), Open Comodo Firewall, select the Security tab, select Advanced, select Configure... in the Application Behaviour Analysis, (click on Help to read the info if you want to know more about what you are disabling), uncheck Monitor DLL Injections, click OK...... Done!
Finally.... thanks to Ed_P below for pointing out that I had missed out 'Advanced' in the instructions above.

For others that come this way on my system I found the path to be Comodo>Security tab>
Advanced
>Application Behaviour Analysis>Configure

Wow, thank you for the info. I was just getting ready to uninstall 2.4 because of this very issue. I unchecked monitor DLL etc. and the CPU usage immediately went way down.

yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
thank you for the trick !!!!!!!!!!!!!
i was wondering if i could really continue to use comodo firewall because of this speed problem with internet.
and thank you ed_p, indeed you have to clic on "advanced" in the security tab before access to "application behavior analysis".
thanks
(i suggest to add something like "speed problem with internet [resolved]" in the title of the topic because those who have the same problem and haven't realized that cmdagent uses 100% cpu too often, will not open this topic to read it, thinking it is not the same problem as their.)

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I was about to uninstall Comodo, that cursed cmdagent was killing me and my poor old Windows 2000 Pro. If anything, it is a bit faster than it was before I installed Comodo 2.4.18.184.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Dear bipsbd, welcome to the forum.
You posted in the wrong board. This is Help for version 2. You want to post a new topic in
Help for v3
.
In addition, CPU usage and internet speed are two different things. You might want to clarify which is which when you post your thread title.

I am new to this group. A few months ago I had the problem of serious CPU usage which, over a period of weeks, had been getting progressively worse. I did most of the cleanup things (anti-virus, spyware, defrag, registry cleanup, etc) but it made no difference. Computer speed became so slow it was almost unusable (10 to 15 mins to open a window), and I got a blue screen trying to boot into Safe Mode. Somehow I suspected that Comodo PF v2.4 was the problem so, after taking over an hour to open Add & Remove Programs, I managed to uninstall it. My computer returned to normal, so I decided to use XP Firewall for a while.
After uninstallation I ran Registry First Aid and CCleaner to try to remove remaining bits, but this did not succeed. Recently, I needed to turn the XP firewall off, but when I did that the XP Security Centre showed that Comodo firewall was running - although I am reasonably sure it was not as there were no Applications or Processes relating to Comodo shown in task Manager, and there is no Comodo folder left in C Drive. A search of the registry revealed 40 Comodo entries, many of which were benign, but there are 5 entries in the Legacy area which can not be deleted.
How can I complete this uninstallation and remove all traces? Is there a utility I can use? Even if I intend using CPF in the future I think I should start with a clean slate.

trakkal - welcome to your forum
It probably wasn't anything wrong with your system or installation:

The FAQ rocks! It's been long time since I've quoted the v2 FAQ because I'd assume it's self-explanatory as a sticky topic in this board
. It would be a real shocker if you didn't find the answer in those topics.

Hi DCFC79,
Are you sure you are using Comodo Firewall
V2
? If you are using V3 you need to post this question in the Comodo Firewall V3 Forum. I'm afraid I'm still using V2, so am unable to help any more if you can't get the help you need from my first post.
Good Luck mate!
Mike
