Stop "switch to Installation mode" prompts ?
«
on:
December 08, 2009, 07:44:35 PM »
Hi,
Everytime I click the option "Treat as installer/uninstaller" on the Comodo Defense+ popup,
I always get the window asking "Switch to Installation Mode ?"
I don't want to do that, Is there any way to stop these unnecessary popups, and automatically run in normal mode please ?

I don't believe there is a way to disable this as this is the desired behavior.
Out of curiosity, why don't you want to switch to installation mode? It's definitely the way to go when you're installing something. Unless you like clicking through all the alerts that pop up during an install.

The window asking "Switch to Installation Mode?" is asking for confirmation that you really intended to select "Treat as installer/uninstaller". This is done as installation mode gives a wide range of priveleges to software run in this mode. It's for your safety more than anything else.

The only way I know of the supress these alerts is to not select "Treat as installer/uninstaller" in the first place.
The pop-up appears as a direct result of your deliberate action.

hehe, funny.
have you never tried to answer with "no"?
user: treat "this application" as installer or updater.
comodo cis: do you want to switch to installation mode? (thats ANOTHER question, lets say "an add")
user: no! (because i just want this application temporary to be treated as installer or updater, NOT the whole machine)
done
As if I didn't know that.
My question was to stop this behaviour EVERY TIME i click the "Treat as installer".
[at]Panic, concerning the"confirmation that I really intended....." ..... That's why there are OK and CANCEL buttons for on the first popup, don't you think ?

You need to say yes if you want installation mode to work properly for that installer. If you say no, you can still get alert popups.
The upcoming version 4 is supposed to be able to automatically determine an installer, so this shouldn't be necessary.

You can't forget it because it keeps giving you reminders.
However, installation mode isn't like training mode. With installation mode, you'll still get an initial popup, so nothing is going to install silently.

a few pop ups are better, than to forget the installation mode,
or than a trojan thinking right in that moment: "well, i think i will install myself now".
In installation mode, only the executable that was mentioned in the initial alert (and any child exes or processes spawned by that exe) is granted the elevated privileges. The entire system is not laid bare, only the access rights for the installer.
Akternatively, you could just never use "Treat as installer" and just answer the alerts.

Exavtly, that's why I always (when installing stuff) use Treat as installer, and click NO when it pops up "Switch to installation mode", at most, I get 2 or 3 more popups, and I can be safe that no other stuff is happening behind my back, or forget to switch off installation mode afterwards.
That's why I would love to see a switch to not bother me with that "Switch to installation Mode" every time. Afterall, I chose "Treat as installer" for the process I started, I have no interest to switch the whole app into installation mode. It's just quite irritating to always have that popup asking for it. If I really want to switch to fullblown installation Mode, it's just 1 simple click in the main window.
Therefor the request, to not bother people everytime they treat an app as an installer.

which is exactly what you would get if you did not initially select "Treat as installer".

Then don't select "Treat as installer" in the first place.

Installation mode is like pregnancy - you is or you ain't - there is no halfblown installation mode.

IF installation mode would be meant ONLY for the application and its childs...... why should it stay switched on after installation is finished? this is a hint for a more global behaviour.
But installation mode
is
only applied to the application that you tell it to treat as an installer/updater and click "yes" to enter installation mode...
Nothing can be installed behind your back even if you fail to see any of the reminders asking if you want to go back to your previous mode and leave it in installation mode indefinitely. As I've already said, installation mode isn't like training mode.
This is what is happening in your and the original posters scenario.
1- Start installer, select "treat as installer/updater" from the alert.
2- CIS says, do you want to enter installation mode?
3- You say "No", so you aren't actually in installation mode.
So why select "treat as installer/updater" when you are getting almost no benefit from this selection? Any child processes spawned by the installer are still going to ask for your permission during the install which basically negates the whole purpose of installation mode.

My point exactly!!! Why select one mode and then immediately cancel it??

the installation MODE is something totally different. i didnt choosed it, or cancel it, when i say no. i didnt wanted it.
But you
did
choose it... You told it to treat the application as an installer/updater. This initiates installation mode, which you then tell to bugger off. The program is only doing what you've asked it to do.
Again, when you answer "yes", installation mode is only in effect for the single application you are installing...
Apparently you do not realize that you are doing exactly the same thing installation mode would be doing by telling CIS to treat the application as an installer/updater, then telling it to allow the spawned child processes to run!
No other processes are going to be given the greenlight when using installation mode
! Only the parent/child processes spawned by the single application you are installing are allowed to run without triggering alerts. You seem to think that installation mode is insecure, which isn't the case.

clockwork good point:
switch to instalation mode really sounds like global thing.
When instalation is complete ( so i guess that setup.exe file is closed) the instalation mode is still on. So it doesn't look for this setup file, but all system. So i think that switch to instalation mode must consider the process which is instaling app, so that when it's close, the CIS switch instalation mode off. But after-instalation proccess might want to install other aplications that are in addition to main instaled aplication.

the main point of my argumentation is this "CIS GUI click field" for "switch to installation mode".
that somehow doesnt fit with "per application" use.
or is it just coincidence that it has the same name? i think, mode is mode
I agree that it is loopy (and redundant and possibly dangerous) to have it there.
I don't think there should be a way to manually invoke installation mode. CIS should offer it as an option only when an executable is launched.
I've never used the link in the GUI, other than to "Switch to previous mode" if an installer completes before the alert prompts me to turn it off.
I would recommend that you never use the GUI link and activate installation mode only when offered in a D+ alert.
Cheers,
Ewen :-)

The general switch to installation mode in the GUI only allows parent processes to run. Any spawned child processes will still ask if you want to allow them.
