http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-052.mspx
--> this is confusing. Why would XP SP2 and SP3 be listed in both the affect and non-affect sections? So is this update even needed? Supposing it's important, should I install both KB938464 because I have XP SP2 and IE 6 (and then for
PowerPoint 2003
) ? Here's what I mean:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=e0bd6fbe-f46e-4961-9a79-49ec77d39439&displaylang=en
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=a860d2d9-653d-4ddb-bbff-323d3ccdb866&displaylang=en
Hmm...my IE 6's specific version is SP2, so if that article refers to IE 6 SP1, I guess I don't need the second one.

I can't get the first link you posted to work, but here's what confuses me with 954593:
Affected Software:
Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows XP Service Pack 3
(just OS, no component)
Non-Affected Software:
Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows XP Service Pack 3
(several components listed, e.g. IE6 & IE7)
Other than the "non-affected" IE6 I have no M$ software except XP SP3. So "affected software" tells me I need this update, independent of components, but "non-affected software" says that the only M$ application I actually have - IE6 - is non-affected? IE is non-affected but XP is affected, thus I need the update?
What about
954156
, would I need such an update when I don't have WMP? I still have WM codecs.

I should've updated my last post yesterday when I figured it all out:
954156 - I myself thought I needed, but when I tried to install, it detected I had no such Windows Media Encoder 9 Series. I'm not sure if it's due to deleting files according to BF...
, but this meant I couldn't install it.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-052.mspx
--> M$ wasn't clear on the second chart when they should've been.
The part on
"
Non-Affected Software:
Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows XP Service Pack 3 (several components listed, e.g. IE6 & IE7)"
means you don't need that specific update because IE 6 's service pack is based on XP's service pack. So technically you have IE 6 SP3 (you can check the About Internet Explore menu), which means you don't need the "IE version" of the GDI+ patch.
But the part on
"
Affected Software:
Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows XP Service Pack 3 (just OS, no component)"
applies to us because it's on the OS itself, not any specific program. So you should install the "OS version" of the GDI+ patch:
KB938464
.
Oddly enough, the GDI+ patch on PowerPoint 2003 Viewer didn't seem to add anything in terms of files or registry entries. I verified this with Zsoft Uninstaller.

Thanks Soya, what you say makes sense. I guess I should try to install the GDI patch but I'm quite sure it won't work on my messed up system.

Matty, I would've posted what has changed/added, but I deleted by Zsoft Uninstaller log. I usually do so when I know I won't be uninstalling something from the PC. Can you post the link to the KB954593 download page - whatever one you're thinking about installing?

You guys pick your updates. I've gone back to letting M$ give suggestions, then I chose myself (on Microsoft Update in IE6) what to install. This is a compromise between your method and leaving it completely to Automatic Updates.

I've decided to not download any updates at all!
Will wait and see if there will be a Service Pack when they stop supporting Windows XP...

Good decision Rag
I think there will be no more Service Packs for XP. SP3 is a final one. MS will only push security updates

M$ is
too lazy
lacks incentive to release any more SP's for XP. They even admitted that SP3 doesn't provide major upgrades.
