OpenSolaris is now OpenSolaris 2008.11.
Who has been using it? If you have, what are your thoughts?
Best regards

OpenSolaris is not Linux.
P.S: I forgot to paste the link for it here. Here it is -
http://opensolaris.org/os/
OpenSolaris is also the base for Solaris fron Sun, which is also free, but mainly for enterprise use.

First of all, it does not have to be better, just different and to cover the needs of those who wish to use it. That's what I hope for an O.S. At the same time, to be secure.
You could try to search for "OpenSolaris, a Linux better than Linux" or "Solaris, a Linux better than Linux". You may find some good articles about it. Of course, there will always be those Linux fanboys protecting Linux all the way to the infinitum.
Here are some links that I found. Some are for Solaris and not OpenSolaris, but since OpenSolaris is the base of Solaris, I guess it won't be too far from it either.

Those are just a few links.

Solaris (as opposed to Open Solaris) is only free when shipped with SUN supplied hardware.
Open Solaris is pretty danged good. Very secure, but doesn't have a lot of the bells and whistles that attract new *nix users.

Actually, Solaris is free without having to get the hardware.

Thanks for that. It's been a long time since I've checked. Next time I'll engage brain before putting mouth into gear.

No problem. I wasn't aware that in the past we had to get the hardware for the free Solaris. The first time I got in touch with such OS was in 2006.

It was originally only available for Sun's SPARC processors which were only used in SUN hardware. Really proprietary Unix to start with.

Yes, that I am aware. Just didn't know it was only free if you get only the hardware. But, it does make sense. After all, why releasing it for free for other plataforms, if not supporting them.

I'm downloading it.
Will tell from the bottom of my heart what I feel about it later.
Edit: This one is based on OpenSolaris and Ubuntu. Must be a real peach! Or not. No idea. .

OpenSolaris is now OpenSolaris 2008.11.
Ihave been using OpenSolaris on my main laptop for about one month.
I am absolutelutely going to keep it.
disadvantages
-1. limited number of laptops that support it - mine is IBM T42p.
-2. missing video / audio codecs.
-3. A lot of command line work if you use it as a server - did not get webmin to work altough there is a pakage.
advantages
+1. "time slider" backup keeps the old files forever (if you got the space)
For common user: If you dont get the network up from CD desktop, dont bother installing it.
