The irony is. Godaddy already had an exemption from being shut-down under any new SOPA legislation.

Quote
Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO), the only member of Congress present at the hearing with any tech experience, having founded several web companies, introduced two amendments: one to exclude universities and non-profits from being subject do having to shut down their own domain servers if accused of piracy under SOPA, and the other to exempt dynamic IP addresses, such as those found on web-enabled printers. Both were voted down.

Polis pointed out that SOPA and Smith’s amendment already excluded certain operators of sub-domains, such as GoDaddy.com, from being subject to shutdowns under SOPA.

“If companies like GoDaddy.com are exempt, why aren’t non-commercial domain servers exempt?” Polis asked.

Thank Rad, that explains it. I really couldn't understand how GD could support SOPA so keenly given some of their apparent customer base. That is one bizarre exemption.

On the 18th January, there will be a congressional hearing and for the first time, the people who really understand the technical implications of enforcing SOPA/PIPA will be allowed to testify. In support of this event Reddit has decided to 'go dark' for a 12 hour period.

If not the last nail, certainly a big one..

.. Proposed laws must not tamper with the technical architecture of the Internet through manipulation of the Domain Name System (DNS), a foundation of Internet security. Our analysis of the DNS filtering provisions in some proposed legislation suggests that they pose a real risk to cybersecurity and yet leave contraband goods and services accessible online. We must avoid legislation that drives users to dangerous, unreliable DNS servers and puts next-generation security policies, such as the deployment of DNSSEC, at risk.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) today said he plans to remove a provision in the Stop Online Piracy Act (H.R. 3261) that requires Internet Service Providers to block access to certain foreign websites.

Whilst the focus has primarily been on SOPA, we mustn't for get about PIPA, which is just as dangerous to Internet freedoms and will be up for cloture vote in the Senate on January 24th.  A three fifths 'yes' vote moves the bill forward.
