SOPA Markup Runs Out Of Time; Likely Delayed Until 2012.. or not!
[techdirt.com]
Quote
.. Despite the fact that Congress was supposed to be out of session until the end of January, the Judiciary Committee has just announced plans to come back to continue the markup this coming Wednesday. This is rather unusual and totally unnecessary. But it shows just how desperate Hollywood is to pass this bill as quickly as possible, before the momentum of opposition builds up even further.

The list of countries the Entertainment industry is holding up before Congress, as examples of where DNS filtering is effective. Welcome to the 'free' world as visualised by SOPA/PIPA
China, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Armenia, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Bahrain, Burma (Myanmar), Syria, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
It worked for China, why not the United States?

I was
very surprised (
honestly
) seeing Armenia
in the list.
Since we are not allowed going political here I will just refrain (myself) from comments
... but just a lil remark:
Do you really think & being serious about all this shemozzle, meaning that Media/Hollywood/copyright/piracy/ etc. are the main players in this grotesque? heheh!
Most likely you are kidding yourself - That is just a very convenient "umbrella" for government...('s) censorship - nothing else
Cheers!

The US is incredibly two faced about censorship (amongst other things). On the one hand, they're happy to berate countries like China for repression of free speech and Internet censorship, whilst trying to forge through bills like SOPA/PIPA. Let's face it, these bills are designed to limit what can and cannot be done on the Internet and by any other name, that's censorship.
I don't really think it matters which agency is responsible for the individual legislation, whether it's people like
Lamar Smith
, the head of the House Judiciary Committee, responsible for SOPA, or whether it's the proponents pushing for a tired Internet and and end to Net Neutrality. The net (no pun intended) result will be the same, a fractured and elitist Internet
If the US wants to censor it's citizens, that's fine, unfortunately, it won't stop there. Those with vested interests in propagating these regulations, will stop at nothing to try and enforce their ways of doing things.
Witness the current
fiasco
in Ireland, where Entertainment industry have threatened the state with court action, unless they get their own way. Or the
blackmail
taking place in Belgium against ISPs. If SOPA is made law these efforts at censorship will escalate and it won't stop at the well known 'file sharing' sites. To understand that, one only has to consider the domain take-downs by ICE, Rojadirecta and Dajaz1 and these happened without the benefit of SOAP/PIPA.
At the end of the day, unless someone pulls the plug entirely, I'll lean on my favourite Internet quote by John Gilmore - "The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it."

Wow.. they changed their tune. Yesterday it was: It's just not impacting our business & we see no reason to change our support of SOPA.
Personally, I always thought it was some sort massive irony GD supporting SOPA anyway.
