The icon is in the taskbar when there's an e-mail account in Opera; also if Feeds are enabled, as Feeds need an account.
There is a possible fix: add /notrayicon to the target in the shortcut, e.g:

"D:\Program Files\Opera10\opera.exe" /notrayicon

(is mine).

I don't seem to have the tray icon anymore, since RC1 or RC2 ()

Anyway, being a complete slim freak, I think Opera rules because it stays so small in its installation despite all the features. My Opera 10 installation is 13.7 MB (not counting the profile which is located in the same folder - single user installation). Last time I checked Firefox 3 (at work, the fox is not welcome here at home) was at least 60 MB including the stuff in Documents and Settings (not counting cache of course).

and if you clean the cache and count the rest as well (hidden in Docs & Sets)? (counting user profile in Opera, minus cache, adds 1.6 MB to the 13.7 MB mentioned above)

It's funny, what a relief it is to launch Firefox when I've used IE, Chrome and Safari. But the real relief comes when I launch Opera.<sup>1

1</sup> I test all these five browsers (although I've heard Chrome and Safari use the same engine) - including several versions of them - for my web development at work.

My Opera folder, including profile folder and Swedish language, file is 9.30 MB. (There is also 2.52 MB in Windows\Installer.)

I have classic installer. Why would you want Windows?

Edit: BTW Flash takes 4 MB in my Opera folder

LOL, no they go into Docs & Sets which I conveniently clean every day from a lot of junk (missed by CCleaner and CSC ) with a batch file.

Use this, it's no longer updated but if works fine.

Set it to clean on shutdown on the system and your good to go.
You can also let it clean after application X closes etc...
