iTunes AirPlay broken
« Reply #30 on: February 25, 2011, 06:09:45 AM »

Doesn't work for me either.

I was using pctools firewall, but that died when I applied the windows 7 sp1.
Changed to Comodo and most things are good, but the airplay icon does not show up at all, even if I
1) Disable the firewall
2) Disable Defense+
3) Give all the apple programs I can see a Trusted predefined rule
4) Exit Comodo completely...

Also tried a reboot.

I am running windows 7 64bit with sp1.
Comodo 5.3.176757.1236

Just about to try uninstalling...

Help!

I can confirm that uninstalling comodo firewall (the free version) causes itunes to start working again.

Interesting when I re-installed I had iTunes running and playing to the airplay express, and the sound died during the installation, before the reboot.

Any thoughts?

Hey and warm welcome to comodo forums mark42!

Could you tell how it now? It can be so that CIS is blocking the sound cards.

I would like to see your d+ events.

I can't see any events under either firewall or defense+ which relate to itunes

Also doesn't work if I set both firewall and defense+ to disabled and exit comodo!

Cheers

Correction - I can get it to work with Comodo installed, but ONLY with both firewall and defense+ set to DISABLED.

If I can get into a situation where iTunes has found the airport express (ie. speakers) and shows the speaker selection icon. (ie. starting itunes with firewall disabled), then I can switch the firewall settings on and off and see when disabled I can toggle between Computer and My AirPort Express.

When the firewall is enabled, selecting the AirPort express fails, with out any error message or any events in the comodo logs. The setting just fails to change.

If you play around too much itunes gives up, stops showing the speaker icon and it is difficult it get it to work again at all without rebooting.

I have captured example network traffic with wireshark which I could send someone or it working and failing, which I could send someone!

When it fails it appears to fail to start an outgoing TCP connection to port 5000. I have tried lots of things like adding explict rules for iTunes and mDNSResponder to allow all traffic.

I have also changed all the rules I can find (application and global) which block traffic to Log. Still not logging anything as blocked thugh:-(.

My understanding is that none of this should be required in training mode anyway...

Cheers

Hi Mark42. Sorry to hear about all your problems and wasted time. It blows me away that Comodo still has not managed to fix this problem. It seams that either they don't really care, or the product just got a bit to complicated along the road and now they cant fix it. every time someone comes along confirming that it's still not fixed I'm happy to be using another program for the time being.

Valentin N> It's not a problem with the sound card being blocked, since apple airplay is (trying) streaming music from the computer with Comodo to remote speakers via apples airplay express device... Try it out, its really cool, then maybe you can find a fix for the rest of us!! :-)

Thanks Kasper

Yeah, this seems to be related to iTunes and whichever of its services that uses the Bonjour service. Airplay, library sharing, remote... The problem still happens when firewall and Defense+ are completely disabled. That should be the most open the firewall is going to be, and it should be the same as it being uninstalled, right? But it clearly isn't.

please try to add itunes folder here CIS ---> Defense+ ---> Defense+ Settings ---> Execution control Settings ---> Detect shellcode injections (i.e. Buffer overflow protection) ---> Exclusions ---> Add ---> Browse...

and in the application rules CIS ---> Firewall ---> Network Security Policy ---> Application Rules Add ---> Select ---> Browse... Now you have search for the wanted file

I hope this will help

Let's first focus on fixing the Defense+ issue.
Can you do the following, open Defense+ and go to "View active process list".

Now please verify the "Verdict" Colum for every process related to iTunes.
Non of those should show anything else then "Trusted".

I did that, all the itunes and also mDNSResponder all as trusted.  I even tried making mDNSResponder as trusted/installer and still doesn't work.   I am at the point of permanently uninstalling comodo.  This problem happens on both mine and my daughters machines.  Once we upgraded.  Have you installed itunes on a couple of machines.. verified the home sharing and then upgraded/installed comodo in your labs?
