I've noticed this past week that my virus database has been frequently (many times per day) updating (and completing). Are the virus writers really that active or is there a problem with the DB updater?

A couple weeks ago Mom was having trouble with the CIS automatic update on her laptop. I downloaded the latest installer and tried to update that way but after the language choice and the next 2-3 interactions, the CIS installer just drops out. I've re-downloaded and rebooted and that doesn't help either.

COMODO has started hourly updates to the virus database so the latest signatures can be added and detected by the anti-virus scanner.

There are like hundreds virusses released every day. So yes, virus writers are pretty active...

In certain countries writing viruses earns a good living.

Is there a way to reduce the frequency of update checks on my end? like maybe every 2-4 hours or longer?

I wonder if that is what made the 59MB size database problem if so we could be looking at a 94MB DB problem. hope not..

Yes, we are making multiple updates per day.
These updates may be related to FP fixing or malware addition or both. At the moment
http://internetsecurity.comodo.com/updates/vdp/database.php
is not updated immediately after we make updates live. This is being sorted out and hope to have this also upto-date by this weekend.

30-min update is different promise, in that for any new malware we get, we will be able to make detection available within that time frame. We are working on it, hopeful to have that done this month.

Thanks
-umesh

Hi,
Yes, page http://internetsecurity.comodo.com/updates/vdp/database.php is in sync with
updates from today. But this page won't get updated in case we fix just FP but will be updated only when we have added new signatures. So at times this can be older than actual database version.

Thanks

Guys has no one noticed that heur.Suspicious comes with the DB its not in your PC
Go here and look under other:

Yes, I saw one Heur.Suspicious definition in 1214. But this one was detected by the heuristics, not a definition (heuristics off = no detection).
These are sign based detection but created by automated system we have. We have kept these to be effective only when heuristic is on. Down the road we should be able to make these available with heuristic off as well.

Thanks
-umesh

If I set heuristic off then I will also lose 5% - ?% of the AV database  ( these automated system made signs ).
Will this be changed in upcoming versions (3.10 or 4.0).

All i can tell you is that the new server heuristics are good at catching Rouges and so on.
