Hi all, further discussions regarding the toolbar can be held here:

Buffer Overflow protection only if you install the Toolbar (bad beginning)

its not about rules, but about adding different logic that sometimes change the lessening of alerts.

Melih

I saw this in action already even with just the Pending Files when I first tried installing & deleting some .exe's: they weren't listed in Pending Files in Clean PC mode.  That's the way it should be and I have less "maintenance" to purge files now Thumb Up

updated to latest from 3.0.22.349 (had no problems with this version). I use Trend Micro PCCillin antivirus as soon as I updated TMProxy crashed and I had to uninstall and reinstall pccillin.as soon as I reinstalled and restarted TMProxy crashed again. so reverted back to 3.0.22.349 and reinstalled PCCillin again and all is ok with system again.

Users can opt out during installation!

We would never force anything on our users!

[...] Of course as always we will always try to give our users a choice!

We thought long and hard as to which route we should be taking. We just wanted to give our users a choice. And toolbar was a great way of legitimately injecting Buffer Overflow protection into the browser. Of course there are other many ways, but this way we could achive BO protection for the browser (where you need it most), give our users a 2nd choice for their Search Engine and make some money. Users are our number one concern!!! Every decision we take revolve around them!

Thank You Melih & the Comodo team for that decision. I like that spirit.
Giving users a free choice of what to install is indeed a very wise and laudable decision.
Please always keep it that way in the future.

Unfortunately, this is not alwasy the case today with other software vendors Wink

Keep up the great work. Excellent Job.

Best regards & thanks again,
raynor

Sorry this is the kind of thing that is fairly called BLOATWARE.  I want security, not a search engine in my firewall.

Give the option of CMF without the clutter of adding a toolbar and you give the user choices.

Here you FORCE me to have the  &*%#^ toolbar if I want the CMF technology. That's not the Comodo I know and love.

I couldn't agree more.

In my opiniont, CMF shoulf be something like a module or plugin to CFP, not a toolbar, as many people hate toolbars. Additionaly, toolbar protects ONLY hte browser and not other apps like CMF does.
toolbars are evil... :/

I think the problem is: the difference between Full blown CMF that provides BO on the PC vs Toolbar based CMF.

Full blown CMF is still in beta and will be for some time as its a complex beast.
Toolbar based CMF (patent pending) was a very clever idea that allowed us to get CMF technology (notice the difference.. not full blown CMF but CMF Technology) to the masses. But it required a toolbar.

why?

because a toolbar operates within browser address space. Which means we could build a specific CMF technology for the browser and thats a good thing cos it stops drive by downloads while surfing..

So... we thought....why not combine this with some money making opportunity and have a toolbar that does both. And literally every penny from this thing goes straight back into R&D

You still have Full Blown CMF beta if you want to use it, we have NOT taken that away from users.

I hope this clarifies it further and look for your kind support.

thanks

Hi Guys,

SafeSurf supports all the browsers. Dont worry. It may not install the toolbar to the browser window(search bar part of the safesurf works for IE, FF etc) but it will still protect the browsers like safari, opera or any other unknown one etc against BO attacks.

It's good to hear that.

Is it possible to provide those of us who can't or won't use the toolbar with another option of making some money for Comodo? All it takes is for you to provide the users with a link to the "Comodo search page" (if that is the right description) and for the users to allow a permanent cookie for that page. At least, I suppose so.

The toolbar doesn't work for me, but I am more than willing to use the Comodo search page as the default for searches. I'm convinced that more people are willing to do the same, in order to support Comodo financially.

Is this possible at all? If yes, what do say about that? And what do others think about this idea?

www.comodo.com/search

this is the page where you can turn this to your home page if you like and use it to search to support Comodo.
thank you
