LOL! Loved the haiku error messages - have you been sniffing nosewool?
Real men code in ADS on a CTOS B-25! Ah for the good old days!
Ewen :-)
Heh. Nah ... PC-OUTLINE!
As to what I've been sniffing, after a 34 hour day, it's Pilsner Urquell ... second onc has done the trick, sleepie-bye-byes for me. Dang! Used to take 12 of them when I was younger! Heh.
But yeah, always LOVED that haiku ... nosewool? How mucha kilo? Boowahahaha! ")

Kevin, i am now convinced that to be a "Real Programmer" i must go back to binary
.
ANSI C is fine, but seriously anything past C is starting to get un-needed for MOST programmers. The specific subsection of IT that you are in makes ASM a requirement and 100% needed, that's fine.
I personally have a brief knowledge of assembly, but have never needed to use it to re-enforce what i taught myself a few years ago.
I'm not sure if I am a "L33t" coder, the term has lost all meaning for me. I have no idea what it is REALLY referring to and whether it can actually be measured (Where are the requirements??
). Why not just be an "Excellent coder" or "Good coder".
How come you draw the line between C and C++? That is truly interesting, as C to C++ is not what I would consider a MASSIVE leap in languages.
How many programmers do NOT have friends??

False positive handling and alert user interface.
«
Reply #64 on:

From my understanding BOClean is committed to covering the more malware possible.
This mentality make it cover a lot of greyware such as MIRC, NIRSOFT utilities etc.
I do find unfortunate that those
greyware are not treated differently than validated trojan
.
I do not remember seeing a prefix like "not-a-virus.trojan_name" or "hacker_tools.utility_name"
I also do not recall any option to
customize
greyware alert.
I understand the design implication and security concern that motivated to choose this approach.
I do not ask to add any of the "feature" mentioned abode.
-------------------------------------------
However i'd like to see BoClean help its users to make an informed decision.
And this is the topic i wish to start.
1) Alert user interface.
I believe that BOC minimalist user interface have good communication to the user
" It just works", "It must be lightweight and non-bloated"
However i do not like the interface that warn the user about possible malware:
It's not very intuitive
There are not many useful information on it unless you actually start to read the message.
Unfortunately computer error are so common that people ignore them.
Even works the Alert interface actually looks like an error.
a) You cannot see that the alert come from BoClean
b) You cannot see that boclean is a program you have installed to protect yourself
c) You cannot see that this program
want to warn you about something
d) You may have a vague idea that you have a choice to make,
but the choice is very unclear (OK/Cancel) is not meaningfull in any way.
All those information are available if you take time to read the alert completely
However in real life you cannot ask that from all end user.
2) User Interaction
I do find the interaction almost "arrogant" because it's based on a
"I can't be wrong,
kill first, judge after
" mentality.
Actually you can only judge if you choose not to delete the file
I'd like the user interface to allow me two things:
Have more choice
I'd like an
easy way to add file to the excluder
The whole file path is already known so i do not have to loose time finding the file
I'd like a way to show file location
Like open explorer and select the file. This would allow me to choose more appropriate action
I'd like a way to report possible false positive directly from this alert
Give me the tools to make the choices
I'd really like an
integration of a web-service
like Jotti malware scan in BOC
This would allow the user to pool and confirm it's choice
If no official collaboration is possible, I'd like the developer to make it possible in form of customization. Like open web browser at predefined address and fill the upload form with the correct path
Alternatively a
online validation service from comodo
which scan the file with multiple engine including it's own
would be a great step in the company mission to secure the world for free
. Also it would allow them for better statistic about false positive etc.

I wish for:
*A plain text activity log file. MetaPad reports it as a "binary file".
*An "About" button that shows the version and has a link to the BOC home page and forum. I have no idea what version I am using right now.
*A "verbose mode" so that you can tell whether BOC is working. I mean, it just sits there like a pet rock, and you don't know if it's working or not. I've been using it for ~6 weeks, and not a peep out of it.
*An "Always On Top" checkbox in the Options Menu. The Tray popup menu gets lost behind all open windows, and it's annoying to have to click them down to find the menu.
Many thanks!

I really wish it wouldn't shut down all the time when you point to the system tray icon. If you fix that, then I'd be perfectly happy with BOClean.

My wish: Rename BOC424.EXE (and the following versions) to just BOC4.EXE for easier configuration of the firewall. More details here:

i wish that kevin mcaleavey was involved in updating the malware databases so that we could be sure that the malware-databases are up-to-date with detections for the newest malware..
also, there needs to be some information posted on the c-BOC webpages about where to submit malware-samples or false-positives to.. i have seen an email address posted in the forum for where to submit samples to, but that info needs to be posted on the c-BOC webpages..
the webpage with information about c-BOC's covered malware is not being updated..
update: i also noticed that the "privacy policy" webpage, linked to in CBOC's EULA, is not up..

I would like to see two extras; a little pop-up box from the tray that says BOClean database updated (it can even tell me through the speaker as well). Obviously it would need the option of being switched off for those it annoyed.
And a log file which tells me when the database has been updated.
Both these are features of Avast ant-virus, and they do give you some kind of peace of mind that at least you are up to date.
Thanks,
Mike.

Here's one for you, Melih.
A unified naming convention/standard or at least a database of what we cover with other known names of the malware.
This would help lift the veil of confusion on what's covered as well as help tracking and recovery from infections.

Just one for the wish list...
There are some people reporting problems with updating, such as not updating on laptops that go into hibernation or suspension, etc.
Would it be possible to have an option that searches for updates so many minutes (user defined) after connection to the internet.
AvastAV seems to do this as default and it works well.
Typical scenario, set to update to 10 minutes after booting machine.
You don't connect within that time. (Get Firewall error box sometimes).
When you do connect the time has passed and it will not update until the next scheduled time (say 6 hours, if set to that).
You switch off machine before that 6 hours are up and are left with out of date definitions.
Of course you can update manually if you remember, but a set time after connecting to the internet would be better.
Just an idea,
Mike.

I agree with MikeG
Not everyone is always online. It would be better if CBOClean would use the "Avast solution" to update as well.
