I already have Balloon messages turned off and still receive AV update notices.
No big deal, as I don't mind the AV notices, but obviously some do.  Maybe add an option to disable these notices (separate from other balloon messages).

I don't mind the AV update notices either. I was using avast previously with the comodo firewall "only" and did like that feature with avast re the AV notices. Now I am trying out the anti virus part along with the firewall in comodo and I do like the AV update notices. Not a big deal to me as they are only there for a few seconds and then are gone. I hope that they won't be disabled completely and the option be left to the user to allow them or not.

As of latest version 3.10 version, AV Update Balloon messages are disabled, Because now also Signatures are being released every 2 hours, Along with FP fixes every 2 hours, which is problematic for some users. You can enable balloon messages back Via Miscellaneous>Settings>General>Show balloon messages.
